FRIDAY, 27 SEPTEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) continues to steal the limelight when the Asian Rugby Federation Union (ARFU) entrusted UMS researchers to conduct heart pulse rate patterns and the movement of referees during the Rugby Championship Seven Aside Asia Tour Series 2013.

The Championship which will be conducted at four locations until November sees UMS School of Education and Social Development (SPPS), Sports Science Programme lecturer, Dr. Mohamad Nizam Nazarudin being given the mandate to conduct the research.

He will be assisted by another UMS SPPS Sports Science lecturer, Pathmanathan K. Suppiah and two students Tomny Wong Kee Kiet and Cheah Wan Xin, using research instruments such as Polar RCX3 watch, s3+stride sensor and G5 GPS sensor.

According to Dr. Nizam, the Polar RCX3 watch is used to measure the heart rate and the tools are able to provide immediate response after each match.

“The s3+stride sensor is fixed to the shoes to measure speed and distance, whilst the G5 GPS sensor acts to record the running pattern. The video recording of the match would also be done to match with the research results,” he said in a statement to the UMS Chancellery Department Media .

He added that two researches were conducted in the first two championship where Malaysia played host, the Malaysia Sevens followed by Asia Sevens Under 20 besides the Thailand Sevens Championship which was held at the White Elephant Nation on 21-22 September.

He will be continuing with his research on the Asia Tour of India Series in conjunction with the India Sevens Championship, 12-13 October, before closing with the Singapore Sevens Championship on 9-10 November 2013. – FL

THURSDAY, 26 SEPTEMBER – Members of Universiti Malaysia Sabah Cooperative (KoUMS) are invited to attend the 8^th Annual General Meeting which will be held tomorrow starting at 9.00 am at the Galeri, UMS.

The meeting will discussed some agendas that needs the final decision of its members.

According to a statement issued by the cooperative, among some of the agendas to be discussed were the election of four Cooperative Board of Directors Members, to deliberate and agree on the Budget for the year 2013/2014 including considering and widening of scope and investment limit from the surplus of cooperative monies.

Other agendas to be discussed included the approval and consideration of any suggestions to the amendment of minor rules of the cooperative, the division of profit and other agendas.

THURSDAY, 26 SEPTEMBER – A talk on ‘Astronomy’ was held at UMS Mosque yesterday.

The talk which was organised by the Customer Services Section, Mosque and Islamic Affairs Unit (UHEIM) was presented by an officer from the Mufti Office Sabah, Ustaz Mohd. Jumat Abdul Razak.

In his talk, he explained the meanings of astronomy and its importance to our everyday life.

A total of 17 participants comprising staff and students of UMS attended the talk.

UHEIM also welcomes the public especially staff and students of UMS to join spiritual programmes such as this, in future.

The talk organised by UHEIM is held every Wednesday at UMS Mosque. - FL
