FPP pascaMONDAY, 17 NOVEMBER - Postgraduate students of Educational Management program, Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has organized a conflict management workshop at Grorich Hall, SMK St. Patrick, Tawau recently.

The workshop, conducted by the Director of Mind the Gap Research and Training, Dr. Scott Jones from United Kingdom was participated by 18 postgraduate students and 3 teachers from SMK St. Patrick.

Dr. Scott Jones used interactive approaches during the workshop including discussion, role play and team building.

He also shared his experience in conflict management across Asia, South Pacific, Africa, Central America and Europe with the participants.

According to the program coordinator, Dr. Siew Nyet Moi @ Sopiah Abdullah, the participants showed full commitment and actively involved during the workshop.

“Even though some of the participants are not well verse in English conversation, they have participated enthusiastically by voicing out their views, contributing to more enjoyable and meaningful learning experience,” she added.

The workshop was held for two days and certificates were given to the participants during the last day of the workshop by Dr. Sopiah Abdullah, representing the Dean of FPP, Prof. Dr. Ismail Ibrahim.-HH

larian eco campusMONDAY, 17th NOVEMBER – EcoCampus Run in conjunction with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) 20th years anniversary liven up with encouraging participations from both local and UMS communities.

The programme was organized by UMS Sports Centre were open to a few categories; men’s and women’s senior open, men’s and women’s veteran and also student category for 18 years old and below.

The programme, started as early as 6.00 in the morning, was also joined by UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah.

Later during the programme, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah also presented the prizes to all the winners.

Champion for the men’s senior category goes to Pang Tsun Kuo, who received RM1, 000 while Salesnella Gabi won women’s senior category with RM500 in hand.

Men’s veteran champion was Suhaipin Surin with RM300 cash prize while Hasni Salagan becomes the champion with prize winnings, RM250 in the women’s veteran category.

Jomon Papau and Cyril Michelle Jomani both is the champion in the student under 18 years category, and received RM200.

All winners also received certificate and medal.

The run race routes are all in the UMS campus area for all categories, with around 500 runners participated in the run.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali, Chief Librarian, Dg. Rukiah Ag. Amit, and Head of Chancellery Department, No’man Hj. Ahmad was also present during the programme.

town n Gown LabuanMONDAY, 17th NOVEMBER – 2014 Town and Gown Parade Ceremony have proven a strong cooperation between Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Labuan Corporation.

UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah said that the Town and Gown Parade Ceremony, held annually since 2009, was also a continuity of strong relations between both parties.

He also said UMS, as the 9th Public Institutions of Higher Education (PIHE) in the country, really needs the supports and strong cooperation with the local authority, especially Labuan Corporation in the Federal Territory of Labuan.

“The Town and Gown Parade Ceremony is a proved that there is a good relations and strong cooperation between UMS and Labuan Corporation,” he said.

The statement was said during the Town and Gown Parade Ceremony in conjunction with UMS 16th Convocation Ceremony, Federal Territory of Labuan level, held at Dataran Labuan, last Saturday.

During the ceremony, both students from Faculty of International Finance Labuan (FKAL) and Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FKI) received keys and certificates of appreciation as Federal Territory of Labuan symbolic gestures accepting the graduands as their community. -JA

tamu gadang pestaFRIDAY, 14th NOVEMBER – Once again, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will be the centre of attraction when Pesta Tamu Gadang will be held at Padang Kawad, the EcoTourism Campus on this 18th until 24th November 2014.

The programme was organized in conjunction with UMS 16th Convocation Ceremony, are expected to be full with festivities compared to last year that can be seen through the increased numbers of stalls, exhibitions and games corners that will be open this year.

Tamu Gadang coordinator, Alan James said that the Tamu Gadang is always a long awaited programme by the local communities in Kota Kinabalu. This programme offers publics to join in and participate in games and competitions that will be liven up the event.

“Among the competitions are Strongest Man Challenge, Sports Convo, Car Auto Show, Car Audio System competition, Karaoke contest and among others,” he said when contacted by the media.

Another interesting attraction will be Local Song Competition on 21st November.

“As one of the attraction for Tamu Gadang this year, this first time competition was introduced as another effort for the university to support and liven up the local music industries in Sabah,” said the UMS Student Affairs Department Cultural Officer.

It will be a five-day fiesta for Pesta Tamu Gadang with special appearances from Malaysian artists; among them are Azlan the Typeweriter, Aliff Satar, Farhan, Nash and also Elizabeth Tan. -SS

kekaumas kalFRIDAY, 14 NOVEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) General Staff Union (KEKAUMAS) always ensures the welfare of its members at the university.

KEKAUMAS UMS President, Amat Jutrah Haji Musneh said this involved their members at UMS Main Campus, Labuan and Sandakan branch.

He said, various issues and problems faced by its members had been, are and will be addressed by the union including those involving career, health and education as well as their family members.

“KEKAUMAS will continue to care for the welfare of UMS staff who have become union members. Many issues and problems had been settled so far,” he added.

He was speaking after leading the Exco KEKAUMAS on a courtesy call to UMS Labuan International Campus Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murnizam Haji Halik at his office at Level 13, Tower Building, yesterday.
