Aquaculture Research Centre
Advancing Sustainable Aquaculture Through Science and Innovation
The Aquaculture Research Centre advances research and innovation to support productive, resilient and environmentally responsible aquaculture. Bringing together expertise across the aquaculture production cycle, the Centre develops knowledge and practical approaches relevant to aquatic food production, industry development and sustainable resource use.
Based in Sabah, where aquaculture supports livelihoods, food production and economic development, the centre combines fundamental and applied research with training, technology development and engagement with communities and industry.
Our Research
Our research spans interconnected areas of aquaculture science, from reproduction and early life stages to nutrition, health, production systems and environmental sustainability.
Breeding, Reproduction & Hatchery Technology
Research on broodstock management, reproduction, larval biology, seed production and hatchery technologies to improve the reliable production of aquaculture species.
Aquaculture Nutrition & Feed Development
Research on nutritional requirements, feed formulation, alternative ingredients and feeding strategies to improve growth, health, feed efficiency and sustainability.
Aquatic Animal Health
Research on diseases, pathogens, host health, diagnostics, prevention and management approaches that support healthier and more resilient aquaculture production.
Aquaculture Production Systems
Development and evaluation of production approaches across hatchery, nursery and grow-out systems, including technologies and management practices that improve production efficiency and animal performance.
Aquaculture Biotechnology
Application of molecular, microbial and other biotechnological approaches to understand and improve aquaculture species, production processes and aquatic animal health.
Sustainable Aquaculture, Seafood Security & Safety
Research addressing the environmental, social and resource dimensions of sustainable aquaculture, including production sustainability, resource efficiency, seafood security and seafood safety. This area also examines emerging risks to aquatic food systems, including microplastic contamination and its implications for seafood quality and safety, supporting the development of safe, resilient and environmentally responsible aquaculture and seafood production.
