Annual carnival signifies UMS’ vision of producing balanced human capital

KOTA KINABALU (Jan 21): The UMS Co-Curriculum Carnival (KARKUMS) stands as an important platform in shaping holistic students, providing opportunities for the undergraduates to discover their potential, building their self-confidence, and exploring new ideas beyond the classroom.

Organised by the Centre for Co-Curriculum and Student Development (PKPP), the event is in line with the university’s aspiration of producing balanced human capital that not only excels academically, but also possesses leadership values, creativity and critical thinking skills.

According to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor, active students’ participation in a wide range of activities throughout the carnival helps to develop their soft skills, including teamwork, cooperation and competitiveness in facing the increasingly complex challenges of the world.

This was highlighted in his speech for the opening ceremony of KARKUMS Semester 1, Academic Session 2025/2026, here last weekend.

“This year’s theme, ‘Borneo Goes Global’, carries a profound meaning as a symbol of identity, inclusivity and the global aspirations of the UMS community.

“It highlights Borneo’s rich cultural diversity, history and traditions as valuable assets that can open opportunities for students to shine on the international stage.

“In line with the slogan ‘UMS, The Brain of Borneo’, the theme reflects the university’s commitment to producing graduates who are not only highly knowledgeable, but also rich in cultural values, confident, creative and competitive at the global level.

“Throughout the carnival, various engaging activities are being held, including ‘Course Component Booth’ exhibitions, performances and parades by uniformed bodies, ‘KARKUMS Got Talent’, ‘Borneo Goes Global Ambassador’ competition, as well as various other contests that encourage creativity and innovation among students,” he said.
