INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

Culture is the way of human life that is able to influence the thinking and behaviour of civilised society. Individuals from different cultural background speak different language and have different experiences. Thus, they always have different view of the world i.e they see, evaluate and do something according to their own cultural orientation. These differences create problems when the individuals come into contact with each other and communication plays a vital role in this process. Generally, this course discusses issues related to communication between people from different cultural background and its impact on daily life. Course content focuses on the concept and importance of communication and culture, the application of theory and research as well as current issues in Intercultural Communication.

NEGOTIATION SKILLS

This course is designed to expose students with important negotiation and communication skills that are useful in their lives. Students will be taught various types of conflicts and how to handle them. They are also taught to get to know various styles, approaches and tactics of negotiation. Apart from giving them proper ways to prepare for negotiation, this course also teaches students techniques to close a negotiation activity effectively. Besides teaching the knowledge about this subject, students are also given ample opportunities to improve their communication skills, particularly on written and oral communications, including body language skills. Students will also be taught to behave ethically, be responsible for the tasks given to them and always treasure cooperation and teamwork as well as be respectful to other people.

LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION

This course introduces students to key aspects involved in the verbal process. Apart from that, this course also trains students to construct the communicating appearance in various communication contexts such as speech communication process, language skill, and ethic in verbal communication. Apart from that, students will also be exposed to the cultural context which becomes the background of each communication process, speech act and cultural intrinsic meaning that lies behind each of the interaction process.

ORGANISATION MANAGEMENT

This course is designed to provide an understanding about the theory of organisation and major principles of management such as planning, organising, leading, controlling and staffing. The applied focus of this course is to facilitate experiential learning of contemporary approaches to culture diversity, communication, decision making, leadership, motivation, negotiation, power and politics within a team environment.

CREATIVE WRITING

This course is designed to help students discover and put into practice their own strategies for living a more creative life. More practically, they will learn basic strategies for gathering ideas for, writing, critically reading, and revising prose (primarily fiction) and poetry (which may be fictional or nonfictional). This course encourages students to think of all their writing as work in progress. They will complete a portfolio of fiction and poetry at the end of the semester, but much of their grade on this portfolio will hinge on how hard they work at drafting and revising. In the process of doing the work, they will discuss questions such as “What makes a good story and a good poem?” “What is creative writing as an academic discipline and as a way of life?” “Where do our own stories and poems, and our own writing goals fit in?” “What value does creative writing have personally, socially and politically?

PHILOSOPHY AND CRITICAL THINKING

This course is about the study of general and fundamental truths and the ability to think clearly and rationally, and understanding the logical connection between ideas.  In addition, students will see the context of philosophy in the form of critical thinking.

ART APPRECIATION

This course is aimed at providing students with the ability to comprehend artistic concepts and appreciate literary work. Students will be introduced to various literary works through careful contextual and textual observations of an object. This will enable students to evaluate an art form in a more accurate and profound manner.

INTERFAITH DIALOGUE

The course aims to introduce students a concept of Inter Religious Dialogue as a new paradigm shift in cross-religious communication. The purpose for dialogue is varied: peaceful construction, building bridges and co-existence. This course will discuss the concept of dialogue and its typology particularly Inter Religious Dialogue, recent history of dialogue, current issues pertaining to dialogue and the role of dialogue in religious diversity in Malaysia.

GENDER AND SOCIETY

This course aims to help students understand the process involved in shaping the gendered identity of an individual which involves the critical analyses of society in moulding the gendered perceptions of a person. This course also aims to interpret and appreciate literary texts that emphasise gender-related issues. The course may include issues which are considered controversial and taboo. The reason for such inclusion is to encourage critical exchange of ideas.

ETHNIC PLURALITY IN BORNEO

This course focuses on ethnic plurality in Borneo. The purpose of this course is to expose students to background that affects the various ethnicities in Borneo such as natural process, government policy or political, colonial policy and migration. The course discussions also include the uniqueness of various cultures, customs and ethnic traditions, art, and religious practices that shape the identity of every ethnic in Borneo. In addition, students will also be exposed to the challenges and current issues faced by the ethnics in an effort to maintain their own identity and culture.

CONTEMPORARY POLITICAL THOUGHT

This introductory level course exposes students to the political thought, philosophy, theory and ideas that shape the fundamental questions and problem of political life in the contemporary world. The central questions of i) “who gets what when, and how”, ii) how a society should function, and iii) how it actually functions, as well as key political principles and values like freedom, liberty, equality, justice, and rights are explored via the appreciation of both contemporary mainstream and alternative political ideologies. Emphasis is given to developing the ability of the student to understand, analyse, evaluate, and apply these ideas and thought on current empirical examples. This course also intends to promote critical thinking, and logical discourse amongst students in comprehending the political transformations of the contemporary world.

MALAYSIAN CONSTITUTION

The focus of this course is a critical introduction to the Malaysian Constitution. This course presents a comprehensive, well-organised, and functional approach to the Malaysian Constitution. It associates with the idea of providing students with an overview of the constitution, its system and problems. Students will learn how the institutions were created by the constitution as well as the principles and ideals that govern their operation. The approach is very practical and it prepares students to look at both law and practice; not just the theory but also the working of the constitution. As for the contents of this course, it is divided into a three-layered approach. In the first assembles, the topics that are called the foundations of the Malaysian Constitutions deal with some basic concepts such as to the nature and essence of constitution and constitutionalism, the scope and framework of the Malaysian Constitution, the supremacy of the constitution, and the indigenous character of the Malaysian Constitution. The second group of topics which are put under the theme of Structure and the Institution essentially deal with the main institutions created by the constitution. These are the legislatures, executives and judiciary. The third group unpacks the issues and problems of the constitution. Some of the topics under this group deal with some of the features of our constitution such as federalism and constitutional amendments. Questions pertaining to emergency powers, elections and citizenships the discussions with some reflections on what is termed as constitutional states in Malaysia.

LAW AND SOCIETY

Law and Society is an introduction to personal law. The aim of this course is to prepare students to learn how the law works in their communities and throughout the country. It shows students how the law strives to promote fairness, equal justice and individual rights so that they will understand the value of acting as responsible citizens. The purpose of this course is to expose students to a working knowledge of the law, to help avoid legal issues, and to demonstrate how to handle problems of this type. Legal issues that are of broad interest and concern, such as the rights of minorities and privacy issues are presented in an even handed, non-judgemental way thus offering students a forum for open and informed discussion.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

There is an increasing international consensus that we need to put our world on a more sustainable development path. The fight against poverty continues to be high on the international agenda with more than 1 billion people living in extreme poverty, while human impacts that are detrimental to the environment have reached alarming levels. Looming climate change challenges and accelerating environmental, geopolitical and demographic change - and associated risk and disasters - threaten to reverse development gains and pose new challenges to sustainable development. Sustainable development cannot be achieved by technological solution, political regulation, and financial instrument alone. Achieving sustainability requires a change in the way people think and act, and this is where education for sustainability has a crucial role to play - Education for sustainability (Efs). Efs is particularly important for higher education institutions as they are called toteach, train, and conduct research for sustainability.

GOVERNMENT AND PEOPLE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

This introductory level course exposes students to the political system, philosophy, theory and ideas that shape the fundamental questions and problems of political life in contemporary Southeast Asia. The central question regarding the function of governance and people (society) as well as key political principles and values such as freedom, liberty, equality, justice, and rights are explored through contemporary Southeast Asian perspectives. Emphasis is given on developing the ability of the students to think, understand, analyse, evaluate, and apply these ideas and thoughts using current empirical examples. This course also intends to promote critical thinking and logical discourse amongst students in comprehending the political transformations of contemporary Southeast Asia.

CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN ETHICS

This course aims to expose students to fundamental questions in ethics. In particular, this course discusses the following questions: (1) Is there moral truth? (2) Is an action morally right or wrong because of the consequence of an action, the obligation to respect an individual’s rights or virtue? (3) What are the arguments for or against ethical issues such as suicide and euthanasia, abortion, animal equality, war and terrorism, artificial intelligence, and climate change? This course aims to equip students with effective communication skills in defending one’s own ethical position.

ZAKAT AND SOCIETY

This course aims to provide students with knowledge about the rules, requirements and concept of zakat. Students will also be exposed to zakat payment applications as well as the media in the dissemination of contemporary zakat information and applications. The course also provides insights into its role in society in the areas of social development, educational development, human capital development and economic development. In addition, current issues pertaining to zakat are also discussed.

THE GREAT WORKS IN MALAY

This course aims to introduce The Great Works based on the Traditional and Modern Malay Literature. It emphasizes literary genre and the reading of literary texts. This course will cover various topics which include the concepts of The Great Works, corpus, characteristics, thoughts, cultures, philosophy, knowledge, values and the authors. This course will also enable students to develop skills in literary interpretation, evaluation and argumentation.

LOCAL WISDOM

This course aims to expose students to the basic concepts of local wisdom owned by every society in the world. Local wisdom is not a new thing in human life. Apart from that, it has been rooted in human life and a way to hiding of human life, world and the ethos of every culture. Most of the local wisdom every local culture in Malaysia has been forgotten. This course intends to inform the younger generation about the evolution of the heritage of their ancestors as a way to preserve them.

UNIVERSAL HUMAN RIGHTS

This course introduces student to the basic principles of human rights based on several international agreements that have the force of customary international law. The course discusses the development of the idea of universal human rights. The course instructs students in everyday forms of human rights challenges and ways to overcome them based on a reconstruction of relevant historical and contemporary cases. The course discusses several basic ideas directly and indirectly related to the concept of universal human rights such as human dignity and the freedom of conscience.

LEADERSHIP AND SOCIETY

This course provides a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to improve students’ leadership skills. It highlights the importance of expanding the capacity of individuals to perform in leadership roles within the civil organisation of culturally diversed modern society. At its core, leadership is an activity of leading a group of people or organisation or the ability to do so. Such activity or ability comes through relationships that are built via interaction or communication. It involves establishing a vision, sharing that vision with the society so that they will follow willingly, providing necessary information, knowledge and method to realise that vision, and coordinating and balancing the conflicting interests of all units of the society. Moreover, leadership roles may be formal, with the corresponding authority to make decision and take responsibility, or they may be informal roles with little official authority. This course also highlights leadership roles in facilitating the execution of an organisation’s strategy through building alignment, wining mindshare and growing capabilities of others. Thus, each learning session in this course will be closely tied to those matters, and therefore each student, at any time, complete self-directed activity, in addition to the lectures, as a way enhance the learning experience, and improve their leadership skills and quality.

MEDIA AND SOCIETY

This course is offered to students from all faculties. This course exposes students to the role of media in society. In particular, this course discusses content of media texts, media organisations, what do media do to the society, what does society do to the media, media and children, media and young adults, media and adults, media and women, and media and marginalised/underprivileged community.

MARINE AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

This course will introduce students to the fundamental aspects related to marine environment, factors that influence it and its effect on community development. Elements of marine and maritime history, geology, biology, physico-chemical Oceanography are important areas to understand the overall marine function, importance and effect on coastal and island community development. Some of the topics emphasised are ocean circulation, ocean life, environmental pollution, climate change and impact on community development. Factors affecting and threatening the marine environment will also be discussed. Students will also have the opportunity to get to know various organisms in the living ocean and its economic value and strategic importance to humanity and community development.

LANGUAGE REVITALISATION AND DOCUMENTATION

This course is an introduction to world languages.  This course discusses the status and threats faced by languages globally and locally.  This course also highlights language endangerment due to choice and use, language shift and loss, language death and suicide, the connection between an individual's use of language and his or her cultural identity. This course discusses the opportunity of language revival and documentation.

SUSTAINABILITY OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

The course aims to expose students to the sustainability of human development which includes a description of the definition of human development, the role and function of government, society, families and individuals in the development of human development in Malaysia. The development of human development in this country is measured by the indicator of education level, health status and the living standard of the population. In addition, this course also discusses the challenges and current issues to improve the sustainability of human development. Discussions on this matter can encourage students to improve their potential to achieve a better life.
