anti rasuah kalMONDAY, 20 OCTOBER – Four secondary schools at the Federal Territory of Labuan joined the ‘Say No to Corruption’ programme organised by Universiti Malaysia Sabah Anti-Corruption Secretariat (SPRUMS) Labuan International Campus (KAL) Branch recently.

According to the Psychology Officer of the Advice and Counselling Section of UMSKAL, Nur Iman Reedzal, the schools involved were Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Pantai, SMK Labuan, SMK Mutiara, and SM Sains Labuan.

She said the programme was to give exposure on the evils of corruption and to instil the values of anti-corruption among students.

In addition, she also said that the programme was able to provide opportunities for the young generation to offer their views and suggestions that could bring about benefits to SPRUMS to produce graduates who were with integrity and corruption-free.

Various activities were organised including talks, group-training, telematch, appreciation night, ice-breaking, logo creating and KAL explorace. – SS (fl)

Felo1MONDAY, 20 OCTOBER – The Housing and Hospitality Division, Student Affairs and Alumni Department, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in collaboration with the Principals of UMS Residential Colleges recently organised a workshop on Residential Colleges and Fellows Development Management at the Seminar Room, Anjung Siswa.

The workshop was organised to improve understanding and to prevent any unwanted activities which were against the roles and responsibilities of fellows of residential colleges.

The closing ceremony was officiated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) UMS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali.

Speaking at the ceremony, he said the roles of fellows were important in the welfare, safety and personality and academic development of students.

“The roles of fellows comprise all aspects in assisting principals or college heads to manage students’ activities, organise counselling and consultations and ensuring the implementation of rules and discipline among students,” he said.

A total of 70 participants comprising Principals, Deputy Principals, administrators and fellows of residential colleges attended the workshop. – ZMD (fl)

Gema CiptaFRIDAY, 17 OCTOBER – The Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) continues to uncover the talents of new composers and songwriters from among their music programme students in Sabah through the Gema Cipta Competition 2014.

The competition which was held in FKSW Dewan Resital (Recital Hall) recently saw 10 participants taking part comprising of students from UMS, Sabah Institute of Arts (SIA), Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR) and students from the Teachers Training Institute Kent College.

The first place of the Gema Cipta 2014 was won by SIA student, Erica Lee Siau Chee with her song entitled ‘Kaleidoscope’, composed by Eugene Tong How Cheng. They received cash prize of RM700, trophy and certificate of participation.

Second and third places went to UMS student, Muhammad Syuwari Sutrisno and Velary Vencent Tian Sim respectively earning them RM500 and RM300, a trophy and certificate each.

Another UMS student, Yong Shy Wee won the best performance category earning her a guitar and a trophy.

Dean of FKSW, Prof. Dato’ Hj Hamdan Hj Adnan said the competition acted as a platform in producing young and talented composers with quality in the music industry on par with international musicians.

“I am confident that this programme will also help students to hone their talents in creating and composing songs,” he said in his speech which was read by FKSW Deputy Dean (Academic and International), Suzalie Mohamad. – ZMD (fl)

Pasukan UMS meraih tempat ke-4 dan membawa pulang trofi dan wang RM1500FRIDAY, 17 OCTOBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) debate team won fourth place in the Malay Language category at the Gender Debate Competition 2014 held at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)

The match saw UMS entered the finals for the first time in the competition and went home with a trophy and cash prize of RM1,500.

The champion title went to the International Islamic University (UIA) B, followed by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) as the first runner-up and UIA A in third place.

The competition was organised by UPM in collaboration with the Universities Debating Council Malaysia (MADUM) saw 60 teams took part.

The prize-giving ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Malaysia, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim. – SS (fl)

myinovasi20014TTHURSDAY, 16 OCTOBER – Five teams sent by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to the MyINOVASI 2014 were selected as among the finalists that will enter the Finals of the competition which will be held from 15-16 December 2014.

The five teams were the choice of the jury through a number of their innovative projects such as Beach Cleaner, Eco-friendly bus stop cooling system, porous pavement, hybrid clay rainwater filter and coconut gravel.

According to the project supervisor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nurmin Bolong from the Faculty of Engineering, the projects was expected to give great impact and benefits directly to the industry and community, at the same time instill the habit of being concern towards to needs of the community and environment.

He said the five finalists also received a cheque of RM5,000 at a ceremony in the Federal Territory of Putrajaya.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali expressed his pride in the achievement.

He said the success was able to instill the culture of innovation that continued to be the practice of the campus community especially among students.

MyINOVASI 2014 which attracted the participation of 1,250 teams this year saw 20 teams from Public Higher Learning Institutions selected for the finals, while the rest were from the Private Higher Learning Institutions, Polytechnics, Community Colleges and the Teachers Training Institutes (IPG). – SS (fl)
