wacana ppumsFRIDAY, 05 APRIL – A talk on ‘Culture Excellence, Where Are We?’ was organised by the Management and Professional Officers Association Non-Academicians Universiti Malaysia Sabah (PPUMS) at Dewan Resital, UMS.  This Cultural Talk was attended by administrative staff of all levels including support staff and students of UMS.

The speaker was an award recipient of the National Artiste Award Artistic Category, Khalid Salleh who is also an actor, theatre activist, master of ceremony and writer.  While delivering his talk, he injected his life experiences saying that in his quest for knowledge to study the lifestyle of society he lived the life of a hobo and living in a hut.

He said the search for knowledge was not only limited to learning sessions in school and the like but also through observation and everyday life experiences.  This winner of Best Male Actor at the Asia Pacific Film Festival, the same award won by the great legend Tan Sri P. Ramlee reiterated that self identity should be strengthened by always holding on to the genuine Malay culture that is the focal point of Malaysian lifestyle since time immemorial.

Earlier, the President of PPUMS, No’man Hj. Ahmad in speech said that the organising of this talk is in response to the Vice-Chancellor’s message themed Building Culture Excellence Exploring the Future.  Thus, he hoped that all those present would be able to propagate these newly gained knowledge to their counterparts who were not able to be present so that they would also gain from it and together strive to bring the university forward.

“Indeed this cultural knowledge should be practiced by all staff and students befitting the function of UMS as a knowledge institution,” he urged.  Also present at the function was the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Prof. Datuk  Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah and the Registrar, Datuk Abdullah Hj. Mohd. Said.

spks thailandFRIDAY, 05 APRIL – Universiti Malaysia Sabah through the School of Psychology and Social Work (SPKS) will be sending 25 students to the Prince of Songkla University Thailand on the 7 April.

Deputy Dean (Academic and Student Affairs) Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd. Dahlan Hj. A. Malek said the programme among others was aimed at establishing close cooperation between the two universities.

He said the programme focusses on the services with the community at the educational campus and its surrounding areas.

“The programme which will be conducted by third year students will give an enormous impact to its participants through the sharing of ideas and exposure to foreign countries’ learning methods which is seen very timely especially in answering to the government’s call to excel in the empowering of human capital development agenda,’ he said when officiating at the ceremony.  Also present were the SPKS Head of Social Work Programme, Risalshah Latif; Programme Director, Bursa Nawawi and lecturers of SPKS.

According to Dr. Mohd. Dahlan, the delegation involved in this programme will be bringing with them the university and country’s image as a message of peace and showcasing the culture and eastern ethics which is consistently practiced by Malaysians.

“At the same time, the students will be able to witness the eco system around the villages which they will visit in Thailand so as to apply the same in the implementation of eco-campus in UMS,” he added.

The delegation will be in Thailand for a week and will be expected to return home on 14 April 2013.

Palapes-8307THURSDAY, 04 APRIL – A commissioning of rank ceremony was held today at the Executive Board Meeting Room Chancellery Building Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). Lance Corporal Aricco Jumitih, 23, was promoted to the rank of Corporal witnessed by UMS Vice-Chancellor, Captain (H) Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah.

The commissioning of rank was done by the Army Training and Doctrine Management Director, Brig. Gen. Datuk Abdul Halim Jalal. Also present was UMS Registrar Lt. Col. (H) Datuk Abdullah Hj. Mohd Said.

When met by reporters, Aricco said that he was touched by the gesture. He said he did not expect to be given such an honour which he deemed as a blessing and part of his achievement as a national weightlifter.

“I am grateful of this acknowledgement and promised to continue to give my utmost service to the nation,” he said.

This Kadazan lad who hails from Kampung Mensiang Menggatal is the youngest of six siblings. His involvement in the sports arena is a boost to the weightlifting sports through his many wins. The proudest achievement was when he contributed gold to the medal tally for the Malaysian contingent at the Commonwealth Games 2010 when he erased the old record for a new one in the clean and jerk 62 kilogramme category.

He then went into hiatus due to a mysterious illness befalling him in the mid of 2011 till 2012. Even though he is still in the process of recovery, Aricco promised that he will return to the weightlifting sport scene when he has fully recovered. - FL

integritiFRIDAY, 05 APRIL – Integrity plays a pivotal role in our day-to-day business and should be our way of life.  We must inculcate in us that intention and be determined to practice integrity at all times and to curb corruption, malpractices and power abuse.

Prof. Datuk Mohd. Harun Abdullah, the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah said this during the closing ceremony of UMS 3rd Integrity Month 2013 held at the Galeri today.

He also reminded staff to be doing the right thing all the time and make it as a basis and guideline in executing their duties entrusted to them.   A wise decision and one with integrity he said would offer enormous benefit not only to the organisation but also society as a whole.

At the function, the Vice-Chancellor also presented prizes to winners of each category of activities that was organised during the Integrity Month. Among them were, Quiz contest which saw Dico Pamin from Canselori Department emerged as the winner for the staff category whilst Jumadil Hadji from the School of Social Sciences emerged as the winner for student category.  In the Elocution contest, Nurul Izza Md Nordin, a technologist from the School of Medicine was declared the winner whilst for the student category, Azieyana Aziz was named the winner. 

In the Debating Category which was only open to students, Muhamad Faizs Omar, Marianne Anak Miga and Decker Donny emerged as champions.  As for the Activities category, the School of Engineering and Information Technology captured the top spot.  The winner of the Elocution contest for student category, Azieyana Aziz presented her winning speech.


Also present at the event were the Registrar, Lt. Col. (H) Abdullah Hj Mohd Said who was also the Chairman of the Organising Committee and the principal officers of the university.

pameran bofotTuesday, 2 April – In efforts to disseminate information to all especially to students and parents, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) organised a programme called A Step Closer To the Ivory Tower at various locations in this district.

Today, the programme which was held in Beaufort saw more than 350 students and parents attending the briefing and educational talk held at the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Beaufort 2 hall.

Exhbition kiosks were set up by the Academic Services Division, Student Affairs and Alumni Department (HEP) and UMS Link Holdings Sdn. Bhd. besides blood donation counter by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The ceremony was officiated by State Assemblyman for N.25 Klias, Dato’ Hajjah Azizah Hj. Mohd. Dun.  In her speech she said that students should use the knowledge to its fullest to improve their living standard, including their families and society.  She urged them to build their own strength with the knowledge which they have gained and to be a first class human capital who will contribute towards nation building.  Also present, the Director of UMS Alumni Centre, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmud Sudin.
