MONDAY, 03 FEBRUARY – More than 50 Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) staff took part in a charitable activity conducted in conjunction with Maulidur Rasul, at Serigai Village, Putatan.

The programme organised by the Registrar Department of UMS was supported by the surrounding communities and UMNO Youth Division who jointly carried out the activity at the village’s mosque.

UMS Registrar, Datuk Abdullah Hj. Mohd Said said the activity was part of the department’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) besides being able to mingle with the local residents.

“This programme could instill good values in each of us besides strengthening relationship between employees and residents of the village,” he said when officiating the event. His speech was delivered by the Head of Human Resources, Luqman Ridha Anwar.

When the clean-up and repainting of mosque were done, the participants then congregated to perform the Zuhur prayers before listening to a Maulidul Rasul tazkirah which was presented by an invited speaker, Haji Lamsin Anggali. – MA (FL)

WEDNESDAY, 29 JANUARY – The grand effort by UMS athletes to bring honour to UMS and the state’s name in the ‘Malaysia Longest Distance Running on a Treadmill by a Group’ continued to receive attention from various quarters.

Today, crew from Selamat Pagi 1Malaysia (Good Morning 1Malaysia), Department of Broadcasting Malaysia (RTM) made a live coverage of the event through TV1.

According to the producer of the programme, Adelia Amit; RTM was impressed with the efforts undertaken by UMS especially when the feat was also participated by an athlete with special needs (OKU) and a lone female participant.
 
“This effort and achievement are noteworthy and should be made public as a motivation and an example especially to the younger generation. It is also something for the people of Sabah to be proud of,” she said when met by Chancellery media.

During the live-coverage, TV host Suaran Shah interviewed the programme coordinator, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dayang Maryama Awang Daud and an athlete, Nitas Camillus Tang Sing Bee.

As of 4.00 pm today which is the ninth day, the athletes have run a total of 1,806.84 kilometre in 216 hours which completely erased the old record of 120 hours set by UiTM Samarahan in the Malaysia Book of Records.

The athletes will continue with their run on the treadmill until they have reached their targeted time of 264 hours on the 31 January 2014. – SS (FL)

WEDNESDAY, 29 JANUARY – 1Kal contingent topped the list of teams in the 14^th UMS Staff Sports Championship by collecting 162 points in the Phase 1 of the championship which took place at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Labuan International Campus over the weekend.

Following closely behind was Science United with 58 points, Twin Towers 48 points, D’Arts 44 points, Hercules 37 points, Royal Esteem 27 points, D’Six 22 points and SPL Eagles with 3 points.

Phase 1 of the championship saw 8 sports being contested which included golf, darts, sepak takraw, beach football male and female categories, volleyball female category, badminton, chess and kayaking.

Earlier, during the opening ceremony, UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah urged athletes to adopt the 14^th UMS Staff Sports Championship as a platform for healthy competition to represent UMS in the forthcoming Public Varsity Staff Sports Championship.

He disclosed that UMS was one of the main challengers in the Public Varsity Staff Sports Championship; thus athletes should ensure that UMS be in the radar of teams to be reckoned with in the sports arena.

“In addition to winning, athletes must also take the opportunity to strengthen the existing cordial relationship among staff of this university in this championship,” he added. His speech was read by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Kasim Hj Md Mansur.

Phase 2 of the Championship would be held from 13-15 February at the main campus in Kota Kinabalu. – SS & MA (FL)

TUESDAY, 28 JANUARY – The Borneo Marine Research Institute (IPMB) is offering cash prize of RM500 for their Logo Design Competition in conjunction with the Lobster Stock Community Improvement Project and Putatan Petagas River Awareness Campaign.

According to a statement released by the institute, the competition is open to all UMS community and the logo must be new and original.

The statement added that the logo must bear the green, orange, blue and white colours. Other factors are also considered such as attractiveness, clear, easy to understand and neat.

The second and third place winners will each receive cash prize of RM300 and RM200 respectively.

The community project organised by IPMB is in collaboration with the Putatan District Council and Petagas River Community in efforts to improve the stock of lobster and to improve the socio-economic of fishermen besides conserving the river. - SS (FL)
