SPU and IPB Organise DNA Sequencing Workshop

DNAspu08Oct2013WEDNESDAY, 09 OCTOBER – The Biomedical Science & Therapeutic Department, School of Medicine (SPU), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and UMS Biotechnology Research Institute (IPB), jointly organised a workshop on ‘Clinical Applications of DNA Sequencing’ from 09-10 October, 2013.

The opening ceremony of the workshop was held this morning at the Main Auditorium of SPU and was officiated by SPU’s Deputy Dean of Research and Postgraduate, Dr. Fredie Robinson who represented the Dean, Professor Dr. D Kamaruddin D Mudin.

In his speech read by Dr. Fredie, Prof. Dr. Kamaruddin elaborated that DNA technology was fast becoming an essential tool for research and diagnosis in many fields including medicine.

“It is a needed element in the routine diagnosis and treatment of a range of disorders, including gene disorders, infectious diseases and multi-factorial diseases such as cancer and heart disease,” he added.

The workshop hopes to introduce advances in molecular biology techniques and its application in clinical practice as well as interpret and integrate the use of molecular biology techniques to the field of medicine in diagnosis and treatment.

It covers two parts; theory and practical which will focus on the principles and practical considerations and applications throughout DNA Sequencing. The hands-on training sessions will be conducted at the DNA Sequencing Laboratory, IPB, UMS.

Also present at the opening ceremony were the Director of IPB, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vijay Kumar who will be giving a talk on DNA Sequencing; Head of the Biomedical Science & Therapeutic Department, Assoc. Prof. David Matanjun, a Pharmacist and SPU lecturer Prof. Dr. Mohamad Salih Falah who will touch on DNA Technology.
