CNRET 2014 Assists in Overcoming Shortage in Energy Resource

SKTMTHURSDAY, 01 MAY – The existence of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has a big impact since its inception 20 years ago, in the development of education in Sabah.

Various research activities were conducted to help the government in solving problems facing society in the country particularly in Sabah.

Recently, UMS through its Energy Research Unit (ERU) had organised a Colloquium on Conventional, New and Renewable Energy Technology (CNRET) 2014 to discuss problems on resource requests which were increasing.

According to UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah; Sabah was facing a shortage on energy supply, as such renewable energy could play an important role in addressing the problem.

“Renewable energy such as biomass, hydro, geothermal, wind and solar energy can be seen as an alternative power supply to solve the problems in Sabah,” he said in his speech at the opening of the seminar.

His speech was read by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof. Dr. Shariff Abdul Kadir Omang Al-Haj.

Datuk Harun added, UMS welcomed stakeholders to explore and use green energy in future thus supporting the university’s step in developing sustainable energy for an improved living condition.

The one-day seminar also attracted the Managing Director of Leonics Co. Ltd. Thailand, Dr. Wuthipong Suponthana and 12 presenters from related agencies in Malaysia. – ZMD (fl)
