timur lesteWEDNESDAY, 24 JULYSix Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) academicians were involved in a programme under the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) in an effort to assist the government of Timor Leste to develop Timor Leste Institute of Diplomatic Studies (IDS). The delegation consisted of lecturers from the International Relations Programme School of Social Sciences (SSS), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Asmady Idris, Diana Peters, Wan Shawaluddin Wan Hassan and Carlevin Sukim including two Senior Lecturers from the Centre For Knowledge and Language Learning (PPIB), Dr. Anantha Raman Govindasamy and Dr. Lai Yew Meng who were the Coordinator of the whole programme.

The programme was implemented under the initiative of the Higher Education Department (JPT), Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) assigned under the Malaysian Global Outreach Programme aimed at strengthening world influence at international level through contributions and smart partnerships in higher education especially with developing countries. This noble initiative started at the end of last year and implemented through the organising of three workshops formulating and drafting the Timor Leste (IDS) course structure and curriculum. UMS has been supporting this programme when PPIB organised a maiden workshop on 21-22 January 2013, whilst the second workshop was held at the Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT), Sepang on 11-12 April 2013. The third workshop was conducted at UUM-EDC on 27 June 2013 while the final workshop will be held in Dili, Timor Leste on 19-22 August 2013. Each formulated course will be presented to the Timor Leste Foreign Affairs Ministry to be scrutinised.

Besides academicians from UMS, the programme was also participated by academicians from the Public Higher Learning Institutions (IPTA) and they were Khoo Ying Hooi (Universiti Malaya), Prof. Dr. Rashila Ramli and Dr. D. Ravichandran K Dhakshinamoorthy (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), and Prof. Dr. Kamarulnizam Abdullah, Dr. Mohammad Zaki Ahmad and Dr. Ratnaria Wahid (Universiti Utara Malaysia). Former UMSKAL lecturer, Assoc. Prof, Dr. Abdul Razak Ahmad is now the Advisor at the Higher Education Department and acts as the Chairman of the programme. – FL

pameran tawauTUESDAY, 23 JULYIn their efforts to promote new books published by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), the Publication Unit of this EcoCampus University held an exhibition and book sale in stages. Tomorrow the unit will be holding one at the Teachers Training Institute (IPG) Tawau Campus until Friday before making a stop at the Open University Malaysia (OUM) at the same place the next day.

According to the Publication Officer of this unit, Anicius Justin Adeh, the exhibition is open from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm to the public expecially teachers.

Besides the book promotion pertaining to education he said the exhibition also aims to publicise all researches done by UMS researchers thus strenghtening the university as a publisher of academic books. He said when asked by our corporate reporter in Kota Kinabalu.

“We will continue this exhibition to IPG Keningau from 29 – 31 July 2013. We have held the same exhibition at IPG Tuaran. We hope the public would make full use of this opportunity,’ he added. - FL

Majlis Berbuka Puasa NCMONDAY, 22 JULYThe breaking of fast with the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) which was attended by Principal Officers, Deans and Heads of Departments UMS at the official residence of the Vice-Chancellor at Kingfisher Sulaman, helped strengthen ties among the staff of this EcoCampus University.

UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah took the opportunity to mingle and chat with the invited guests while waiting for the time to break fast which was at 6.35 pm. Guests were then feted to the buffet spread after the breaking of fast prayers was done by Ustaz Razali Saibin.

Guests then performed the Maghrib prayers before they continue with dinner. Among the dish served were Nasi Briyani, rendang, chicken, prawns etc.

Guests then performed the Isyak prayers after dinner. A tazkirah was presented by a special guest, Prof. Dr. Hj. Mohd. Said Mahmud from Universiti Islam Makassar, Indonesia, before they went in line for the Tarawih prayers led by Dr. Muhamad Suhaimi Taat.

After the Tarawih prayers, they had another round of serving. Among those present were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Internationalisation) Prof. Dr. Shariff A.K. green officeMONDAY, 22 JULYUniversiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is ready to implement all values and elements relating to utility savings and electronic waste management in achieving its wish as a model leader in environmental conservation among all higher learning institutions (IPT) in Malaysia. UMS Vice-Chancellor said this today when officiating at the ‘Green Office Awareness’ Campaign organised by the Management Centre of this EcoCampus University.

According to Datuk Harun, UMS’ main aim is to keep the greens based on UMS staff and students’ approach on saving utility at their work place. He added that it should be the university’s responsibility as an IPT to always be the reference centre in increasing educational awareness thus doubling awareness to UMS staff and students including the community on the importance of environmental conservation.

In enjoying the economy’s development, the use of modern technology at the office such as air-conditioners, modern office equipment, and excessive electricity usage are the main contributors to global warming, air and water pollution. Through the Green Office Awareness, it is hoped that UMS staff and students would have a change of attitude that could help in conserving energy at the work place.

“Through this change of attitude, it is hoped that it would help in reducing daily operation costs in energy use in the campus in line with sustainable environment and would be an example towards environment conservation,” he urged.

Thus, he urged all UMS staff and students to renew their commitment in an effort towards sustainable environment and remain as a legacy and for our future generation, thus achieving UMS’ objective to be an EcoCampus.

A talk relating to EcoCampus was also held which was presented by guest lecturers; Dr. Irina Zen Safitri, Dr. Zeeda Fatimah Mohamad and Sitti Nursyafa Bakri. Also present were the Director of EcoCampus Management Centre, Dr. Awangku Hassanal Bahar Pengiran Bagul; Head Librarian cum Green Community Committee, Dayang Rukiah Awang Amit and the Chairman of Environmental Management System Committee, Dr. Bonaventure Vun Leong Wan. – FL

barisan AJKFRIDAY, 19 JULY – The Senior Deputy Head Librarian Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Tuan Hj Zawawi Tiyunin was elected as President of the Management and Professional Non-academic UMS Officers Association (PPUMS) when he garnered the highest votes at the recent Annual General Meeting to elect their Supreme Council members of this EcoCampus University at a leading hotel in Kota Kinabalu.

The election saw the immediate past-President, No’man Hj Ahmad stepping down as his three term expired and made way for Tuan Haji Zawawi assume his duties as the newly-elected President for the 2013/2015 session. The newly-elected committee members consisted of old and new face in the line up, and were given the mandate by the association’s members to hold office for the coming term.

They are the Senior Assistant Registrar at the Registrar Department, Samsuidin Nurdin (Deputy President); Security Division’s Senior Security Officer Sarianshah Shamsudin (Secretary); and Bursary’s Assistant Registrar, Hayati Salleh Baihaki who is also the Assistant Secretary. The post of Bursar is held by the Bursar Department’s Assistant Bursar, Mohd Nazir Manan who retained his said post for the second term.

The UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah who officiated at the event said that the university supported the activities of PPUMS which he said would give a high impact to the university, community and nation. He also hoped that PPUMS would continue to play its role in being more active and to foster good relations with the surrounding community.

“The strength of an association is not on its supreme leader, or its members. It should be supported with strong financial resources. Programmes which are income generating to the association should be well planned and made into reality,” he urged.

He later presented certificates of appreciation to the previous line-up of PPUMS for the Session 2011/2013, besides breaking fast with the members. - FL
