recording seniMONDAY, 29 APRILThe production of a video describing the special practice using the Noni leaves during confinement has made Kelab Seni Recording Team (S-ReT) School of Arts Studies (SPS) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) the winner of the best video at the recent film-making forum and workshop.

The video which was in the form of a docudrama had attracted the judges’ attention in the programme which was jointly organised by the Malaysian Association of Creativity & Innovation (MACRI) and Project Linkages. The forum which was held at Kolej Yayasan Sabah saw Kelab Seni Recording Team competing with other contestants consisting of students from UMS, Kolej Yayasan Sabah and other institutions.

Besides the best video competition, the programme themed ‘Fostering Relationship’ also featured experienced facilitators who conducted the forum and workshop which was held for three days. Among them were Exco committee, Dato’ Dr. Marzalin Mansur, the Director of Project Linkages, Ramesh Pallai and the winner of the Film-maker Award, Gary Chong.

Throughout the forum and workshop, the participants were also exposed to knowledge sharing through experiences, theory and practical activities pertaining to film-making which included pre-production, production and post-production. Participants were also given some challenges in the making of a short video in groups themed ‘Knowledge Sharing’. – FL

semesepanggarFIRDAY, 26 APRILMore than 300 students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Inanam attended the 'A Step to the Ivory Tower Care 4 Malaysia' Programme (SEMEGA) 2013.

The programme organised by the Student Affairs Department (HEP), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was officiated by Datuk Hajah Jainab Ahmad Ayid. In her speech she said that the programme was indeed timely which gives encouragement and motivation to the students.

She added that the programme also injected a new spirit to them to strive for excellence in the academic field.

Also present at the function was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni UMS, Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Kasim Hj. Md. Mansur.

The SEMEGA programme had made pit stops at Kota Marudu, Sandakan, Penampang, Beaufort, Tuaran and Nabawan.

dialogTHURSDAY, 25 APRIL – The public especially students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) are invited to a forum on Dialog Cinta 2 (Dialogue on Love 2) which will be held this Saturday at the Dewan Canselor (Chancellor Hall).  The programme which is expected to start at 7.00 pm offers entrance ticket as low as RM5.00 for UMS staff and students and RM7.00 for outsiders.

According to the Secretariat, this forum which is religious based would feature the finalist of Solehah TV Al-Hijrah, Ustazah Mariyam Sa’ari; Imam Muda Nazrul and a lecturer at the Gaya Teachers Training Institute, Haji Mohd. Syahir Ibrahim.

This programme is organised as part of the Islam Arts Festival UMS which will be held from this Friday until Sunday.  Transport and refreshments will be provided, and souvenirs will also be provided to visitors who are proactive during the forum.

kareografiTHURSDAY, 25 APRILAbout 116 participants participated in the Dance Choreography Workshop 2013 organised by the Culture and Arts Division, Student Affairs and Alumni (HEP) UMS, recently.

The workshop which was conducted for four days was facilitated by dance art instructors who were experienced in their own genre.  Among them were Abdul Hamid Chan, Suhaimi Magi, Christopher Liew, Sharip Zainal Sagkif Shek, Tang Sook Kuan, Addley Brormeo and Jasmit Rasit.  All of them shared their experiences and explained in detail the basic of dancing and choreography besides introducing elements of music in the dance thus explaining the aspects of stage mastery as well as the culture and art of Malaysia.

The official closing ceremony was done by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (HEPA) Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Kasim Hj. Md. Mansur.  In his speech, he said that the organising of the workshop was timely in producing more dance choreographers in addition to shaping students to have confidence thus answering to the government’s call to produce more first class human capital.

Among the participants at the workshop were Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Likas, SMK Tobobon, SMK Kolombong, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sri Gaya, SK Darau, SK Tanjung Aru 1 and other nearby schools.  It was also participated by Kolej Yayasan Sabah, Masterskill Global, Sandakan Dance Association, Kent Teachers’ Training Institute, Sarawak School of Arts Malaysia, Labuan Corporation, and Sarawak Social Devlopment Ministry.

The workshop was organised among others to keep the richness and uniqueness of Malaysian dances so that they will be sustained for future generation. – FL

WEDNESDAY, 24 APRIL – The Mosque and Islamic Affairs Unit (UHEIM) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) continues to play its role in propagating religious awareness among its staff and students.

This morning, a programme called ‘Bicara Pagi’ (Morning Talk) was held at the UMS Mosque conducted by Ustaz Mohd. Issraq Hj. Ramli.  The coordinator of the programme, Ustazah Ainah Ramlan said Bicara Pagi is a programme held every Wednesday as a mode for all Muslims to gain more knowledge on religious matters.

The programme was conducted for two and a half hours, starting from 9.00 am till 11.30 am.  The talk was entitled ‘Perbezaan Khilaf Antara Ulama’ (The Different Ideologies Amongst Theologians) and was attended by 16 people.

She urged on all Muslim staff and students to take this opportunity in making this programme a success, where the Bicara Pagi now had entered its seventh edition.
