UMS was established on 24 November 1994 under Section 6 (1) of the University and College University Act 1971. UMS is the ninth public university in Malaysia.
UMS now operates at three campuses. The main campus is located in Teluk Sepanggar, facing the South China Sea, about 14 kilometres from the Kota Kinabalu International Airport. Its second campus, UMS-Labuan International Campus, was established in May 1999 in the Federal Territory of Labuan which is home to the School of Informatics Science and the School of International Business and Finance. The third campus was established in Sandakan, Sabah on 4 May 2006 offering courses for the School of Sustainable Agriculture.
UMS is a comprehensive university offering courses from Bachelors to Doctorate degrees in Science and Humanities.
There are 13 schools in UMS.
UMS aims for a conducive campus which is suitable for teaching and learning activities. Among the facilities provided are hostel, library, chancellor hall, cafeterias, sports complex, mosque and transportation.
