Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has developed a sustainable battery-free lighting system powered by heat energy under a collaboration to strengthen Stem education in Sabah.

The innovation, titled “Self-Powered Lighting Based on Heat Energy Flow”, was developed by the High Voltage Power Energy Research (Hiper) group from the UMS Faculty of Engineering (FKJ) together with Sekolah Kebangsaan Melikai, Menumbok.

The project was carried out under the “Study on a heat-powered battery-free sustainable lighting system module for the Sabah Stem Education Kit” through a collaboration agreement between UMS, Technology Depository Agency Berhad (TDA) and Seni Gemilang Sdn Bhd.

UMS Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Kasim Mansor said the initiative reflected the commitment between the Government, industry and higher learning institutions in research, innovation and technology transfer.

He said the project, under the Industry Collaboration Programme led by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) with support from the Ministry of Finance, aimed to develop Stem teaching aids based on electricity generation technology using heat energy as an alternative source.
