The Centre for Co-curriculum and Student Development (PKPP) was founded on 1st June 2002 with the aims of shaping undergraduates who will be balanced in the aspects of intellect, spirituality, emotion and physical, developing physical, mental and spiritual endurance of students, generating creative, innovative, productive and proactive thinking and instilling a sense of confidence and persistence in meeting challenges. The management orientation of the Centre for Co-curriculum and Student Development is to provide excellent services in the implementation of teaching and learning of co-curriculum courses which are also core or compulsory courses of the university and to develop students’ potential in attaining interpersonal skills through student development activities.

The co-curriculum courses offered stem from various fields of studies which are relevant towards societal needs and contemporary job requirements. Universiti Malaysia Sabah students must pass a mandatory co-curriculum course of at least three (3) credit hours during their study in order to meet the requirements for the award of Bachelor Degree. Grades for co-curriculum courses are counted towards calculating students’ CGPA.

During their study, students will undertake a co-curriculum course with the value of three (3) credit hours for one semester except for uniform and rescue units which are Reserved Officers Training Unit (PALAPES) (Army, Air force and Navy), Voluntary Police Volunteer Corps (KOR-SUKSIS), Civil Defence Volunteer Corps (SISPA) and UMS Jatidiri (UMS SEJATI) (Natural Disaster, Fire and Rescue, Paramedic, Orienteering and Brass band) which will be evaluated with one (1) credit hour every semester and undertaken between 3 and 6 semesters based on the requirements of each body. Students who enter and register in the university with a CGPA result of 2.40 and below at matriculation/STPM/diploma level or other equivalent qualifications must undertake uniform and rescue unit co-curriculum courses. Students who successfully complete all PALAPES, KOR-SUKSIS and SISPA courses during their study will be commissioned in accordance to the respective bodies.

Lectures and practical training for the co-curriculum courses will be conducted on Saturdays or Sundays with three (3) contact hours each week or based on the requirement of the registered courses. The breakdown for the co-curriculum courses is 30% of theory and 70 % of practical training/performance. Students must also participate in student activities involving the community at large through the co-curriculum courses taken and successfully complete the Co-Curriculum Carnival held on the final week of each semester. During the carnival, students are expected to carry out activities suitable to the courses taken such as conducting art and cultural performances, exhibitions, sports and skills competition, leadership and self-improvement programmes and others.
