FKSW UMS Organises Conflict Management Workshop

FKSW1THURSDAY, 21 MAY – The Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in collaboration with the Research and Education for Peace (REPUSM) Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and the Peace building Club recently organised a Public University Conflict Management Workshop.

The five-day workshop was attended by 148 public university students; 26 (USM), 2 (UUM) whereas the remaining 90 were UMS students under the International Relations programme under the tutelage of Professor Dr. Kamarulzaman Askandar, who then exhibited their projects and presentations as part of the workshop activity.

This workshop was aimed at training the university students in conflict management skills. Through this, there can be an increased awareness among young people on the need to resolve conflicts at an early stage by using the appropriate techniques and prevention approaches.

The students also learned how to apply the ideas of peace and peace building, conflict mapping, conflict resolution which was demonstrated in studying the case of the ongoing peace process in Mindanao, the situation of the Rohingya communities in Malaysia and other relevant cases in the Southeast Asian region.

The opening ceremony was officiated by the Dean of FKSW, Professor Dato’ Mohd. Hamdan Hj. Adnan and was also attended by Professor Dr. Kamarulzaman Askandar, who was the Organising Chairman of this event. – SS (fl)
