Sustainable Aquaculture Activities Need Attention

ocean day2015TUESDAY, 16 JUNE – With the current rapid development of innovation technology and green technology, aquaculture industry should pay attention to sustainable aquaculture activities by combining traditional practices and modern development.

This is because sustainable aquaculture activities could be the key to the issues of demands for fisheries resources and seafood which continues to show improvement.

This was stated by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, Datuk Seri Panglima Hj Yahya Hussein in a speech during the official opening of World Ocean Day and Coral Triangle Day at ODEC Beach, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

His speech was delivered by his deputy, Datuk Hj. Sairin Karno.

Datuk Seri Yahya said, Malaysia has the strength to play a role in aquaculture based on the wealth of its marine resources, the importance of sharing scientific and academic synergies with the fishing communities.

“The government fully supports the efforts undertaken by UMS,” he said, adding that there were many aspects in the field of aquaculture that required improvement on scientific knowledge, environmentally friendly technologies and innovative approaches to achieve the production of sustainable seafood.

He added, the practice in aquaculture activities in the 21st century should move towards a more sustainable future through innovative thinking and the exchange of knowledge among scientists, entrepreneurs and fish farmers.

The event also saw the launching of Friends of Aquaculture UMS, which involves 12 local aquaculture entrepreneurs as one of the earliest partners. – MA (fl)
