lwtn perpustakaanWEDNESDAY, 12 FEBRUARYUniversiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah made a working visit to UMS Library to inspect its services, a place that had become the centre for students and for them to meet staff of the library.

On hand to receive him was Chief Librarian, Dg. Rukiah Ag. Amit and more than 50 library staff.

During the visit, he called on staff to give regular attention to the facilities extended by the library. He said this is important to ensure good quality service offered.

“Conduct frequent monitoring of the condition and quality of the facilities and services provided. Report any damage so that repair work can be done immediately,” he said.

He added that staff must always maintain harmony with each other to ensure the quality of UMS library could be improved.

Meanwhile, Dg. Rukiah when met explained that UMS library strived to improve the quality of services to support teaching, learning and innovation in the university.

She added that the Vice-Chancellor’s visit not only gave and example and motivation to the staff but an opportunity for the library to clear any doubts or problems for improvement.

“UMS library over the years has been actively involved in analysing user needs, provide information literacy, public higher learning institution library outreach programmes and carry out community services to improve quality and promote the culture of reading among the public,” he said.

Datuk Harun was brought around the facilities of the library such as the Pre-school collection, Viewing Room, Nobel Laureate Collection and Aseana Collection. – MA [FL]

Mou-UMS JMGWEDNESDAY, 12 FEBRUARYThe long-standing relationship between Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and the Department of Minerals and Geoscience Department Malaysia (JMG) was further strengthened through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today.

The signing ceremony which was held at the Gallery, Chancellery Building saw UMS represented by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah and JMG represented by the Director-General, Dato’ Yunus Abdul Razak exchanged documents as a symbol of the close ties and various future collaborations between the two parties.

Earlier in his speech, Datuk Harun said the MoU proved that UMS had moved a step forward in enhancing its research and human capital development.

He said the collaboration between UMS and JMG had been on-going informally.

“We have a lot of students who undergo practical training besides the involvement of UMS researchers itself in the projects undertaken by JMG,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dato’ Yunus in his speech said that he welcomed such move which he deemed as having an impact in generating the country’s resources through research.

“We have the data in the fields of geoscience and mineral that can be shared for these purposes,” he said.

He also said that many of his staff studied and graduated through UMS and later served exceptionally in his department.

“Thus, the MoU signed today serves not only as a beginning but also motivation towards forthcoming collaborations,” he said.

lawan pedangTUESDAY, 11 FEBRUARYThe Higher Learning Institution Games (SUKIPT) 2014 held at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam, Selangor continues today with fierce competition among the 107 contingents of public and private higher learning institutions in their quest to grab the elusive medals.

UMS contingent added another gold to their tally with two silver and three bronze through six events.

Head secretariat of the university’s contingent, Charles Thomas when contacted by Chancellery media said, the gold was contributed by fencer Laura Simon through the Women Epee category.

According to him, Laura struggled through the semi-finals in a tough battle that saw her fencing her way to the finals against Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) fencer with a 15-14 point.

“Her brilliant performance carried through to the next round when she beat host UiTM with 15 points against 11.

“Two silver medals were collected by El Said Aziz and Maxanzie Jetol through the Men Long Jump and Men Javelin respectively,” he said.

He further added that the bronze medals were obtained through three female athletes; Merry Gabali, Shirley Ling Shio Ling and Aisyah Fatihah Ma’alif.

“They contributed the bronze medals through Long Jump, Tennis and Petanque. With this addition, UMS medal tally now stands at three gold, six silver and eight bronze,” he stated. – SS [FL]

JTMK maulidurTUESDAY, 11 FEBRUARYThe Information Technology and Communication Department (JTMK) conducted a knowledge and community mission with the villagers of Kampung Kuala Laut, Papar in conjunction with the Maulidur Rasul celebration Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) level recently.

The programme was simultaneously held at Surau Nurul Hikmah and 1Malaysia Village Centre and was officiated by state assemblyman (ADUN) Pantai Manis, Datuk Haji Abdul Rahim Ismail.

In his speech, he urged that such activities be further intensified, not only to commemorate the birth of the prophet Muhammad s.a.w. but as a good practice which should be continued.

 He also praised the efforts of UMS in giving donations to the residents of the village.

Over 30 JTMK staff along with the villagers had a gotong royong to clean the surrounding areas of the surau and 1Malaysia Centre. At the same time, a special class on the use of Microsoft software to primary school students was conducted in a pleasant atmosphere.

Prayer mats, rihal, PA system, grass-cutter, carpets, white boards and surah Yassin manuscript were also handed over to the management of Surau Nurul Hikmah, Kampung Kuala Laut and Surau Ar-Rahimi, Kampung Laut Papar. – MAA [FL]

csr kgbinsulokMONDAY, 10 FEBRUARYThe gotong royong activity at Kampung Binsulok organised by the Chancellery Department, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was not only a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme by the department but a chance to be with the local community in carrying out one of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. sunnah.

Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Ariffin Arif said the practice of gotong royong was a sunnah of the prophet and Muslims were required to practice this sunnah of Prophet Muhammad in their everyday life.

“In addition to gotong royong, the CSR at Kampung Binsulok also gave the chance for UMS staff to be with the local community and to champion knowledge in addition to strengthening relationship with each other.

“These are all the sunnah of the prophet and to commemorate Maulidur Rasul by performing the sunnah of the prophet which is praiseworthy,” he said when officiating the CSR of Chancellery Department at Kampung Binsulok.

A total of 140 UMS staff along with the Sabah Brunei Community Association (PMBS) and the villagers worked together in repairing the mosque, library, KAFA huts and the school building of Sekolah Kebangsaan Binsulok, Membakut.

UMS Chancellery Department also donated computers and educational materials to the pupils of the school there. - MAA [FL]
