MONDAY, 21 JULY – Centre for Strategic & Academic Management (PPSA) recently organised a briefing in preparation for the Internal Quality Audit ISO 9001:2008 (Teaching & Learning) for Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Full-time Undergraduates Programme Implementation Scope.
 
At the briefing, the internal auditors of the university were briefed on audit techniques, and explanation of audit clauses in preparation for conducting of quality audits in future.
 
The briefing was conducted by Chief Internal Auditor of UMS, Senior Deputy Registrar, Norti Hj. Sirin held at the Galeri, Chancellery Building.
 
PPSA Secretariat announced that the audit period will be held for two months starting 25 August 2014 to provide opportunity to conduct audits and follow-up audits at the said Department, Faculty, Centre, Institute and Unit (JFPIU). - ZMD (fl)

ng shi ingFRIDAY, 18 JULY – A passenger involved in the ill-fated plane MH17 was an academic staff of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

This was confirmed by UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah in an official statement today.

The staff was a lecturer with the Faculty of Psychology and Education, lecturing in the Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESL) course.

Ng Shi Ing, 33 was on her way back to Malaysia after presenting a paper at the Antwerp CALL 2014, The XVIth International CALL Research Conference at the University of Antwerp, Belgium.

The lecturer who was scheduled to report back to work on Monday was accompanied by her one year old son and her sister, who was believed to be in the same flight.

Originated from Muar, Johor, the lecturer who started work at UMS since September 2011 was the second child of six siblings born to Ng Pae Soon, 67 and Tan Ah Chin, 62.

Her husband, Lt. Commander Lee Vee Weng, 35 is an officer with the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) at the TLDM Base in Sepanggar, Sabah, Malaysia.

Described as cheerful and friendly, Ng held a Bachelor of Science in Education (Teaching English as a Second Language), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and a Master of Education (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Edinburgh University, Scotland.

Her colleagues described her as being a hardworking lecturer and very dedicated to her work and responsibilities entrusted to her. She was active in attending seminars at national and international levels as a presenter such as at Providence University, Taichung, Taiwan and Beijing Foreign Studies University, China. SS (fl)

FRIDAY, 18 JULY – A theatre group from the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Grup Teater LAB (G-Tel) made it to the finals of the Malaysian Theatre Festival (FTM) 2014.
 
The selection was announced by a panel of assessors from the Department of National Culture and Arts (JKKN) through the competition ‘Manifestasi Teater Negeri’, which was held in April and May.
 
The theatre entitled ‘Vito Il Mafioso’ directed by Arlina Ismail will face five strong competitors at FTM 2014, which is expected to be held starting 26 October until 1 November.
 
G-Tel won the champion title through the same theatre act at the State Level Theatre Festival held in September last year. – ZMD (fl)

UMSKAL asnafFRIDAY, 18 JULY – Staff of Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) presented donations to intended recipients (asnaf) in conjunction with the Ziarah Ramadan 2014 programme at Kampung Durian Tunjong , Tanjung Aru, Rancha-Rancha Laut and Gersik/Saguking.

UMSKAL team of volunteers brought the donation, which were daily necessities to be distributed to those in need.

Psychology Officer with the Student Affairs Division (HEP), Nur Iman Reedzal led the group on the first day at Kampung Durian Tunjong and Tanjung Aru, while the second day to Kampung Rancha-Rancha Laut and Gersik/Saguking led by the Head of HEP, Sharifah Ismail.

According to the programme coordinator, Saradli Arsat, UMSKAL delegation visited the four villages on the island themselves.

“By presenting the donation, the visit proved that UMSKAL community does not leave out this group here at the Federal Territory of Labuan,” she said.

She also thanked the Director of UMSKAL, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali who gave undivided commitment to the programme and in ensuring that it was successfully held. - (fl)

kkfm buka puasaTHURSDAY, 17 JULY – Held at the Wanyan Rooftop Café, The Klagan Hotel, Warisan Square, KKFM, a radio with local concept, celebrated its lucky listeners who won two breaking of fast vouchers with radio presenters and local artistes.

KKFM Radio Manager, Ady Maldin said five listeners were eligible to win two vouchers each to break fast with the radio presenters.

“This is the first time such event was held as a tribute to our loyal listeners who have been supporting KKFM,” he said when met by reporters.

Ady added that the event was also held to strengthen the cordial relationship with its radio listeners.

Besides that, the event was also a platform for the presenters, KKFM crew and listeners to break fast together.

“We also invited some local artistes from Sabah to join us,” he added.

Among the presenters who attended were Othoe (Atukoi Pagi KK), Nizz Hayat (Zon Kampus), Harold (Hot Hyttz), Ramli Carlo (Ampai-ampai Krew), Enn Xaviera (Pilihan KK), newscasters and producers of KKFM programme segments. Also present were Janrywine J. Lusin and Rozza Rothman.

Since 7th July, the radio owned by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) had in collaboration with The Klagan Hotel held a contest called ‘Jawab Dengan Pantas’ in the Atukoi Pagi KK segment.

Listeners could win vouchers by answering questions in the fastest time in the segment handled by Othoe during the Ramadan month, starting from 6.00 to 10.00 am. – SS (fl)
