barisan AJKFRIDAY, 19 JULY – The Senior Deputy Head Librarian Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Tuan Hj Zawawi Tiyunin was elected as President of the Management and Professional Non-academic UMS Officers Association (PPUMS) when he garnered the highest votes at the recent Annual General Meeting to elect their Supreme Council members of this EcoCampus University at a leading hotel in Kota Kinabalu.

The election saw the immediate past-President, No’man Hj Ahmad stepping down as his three term expired and made way for Tuan Haji Zawawi assume his duties as the newly-elected President for the 2013/2015 session. The newly-elected committee members consisted of old and new face in the line up, and were given the mandate by the association’s members to hold office for the coming term.

They are the Senior Assistant Registrar at the Registrar Department, Samsuidin Nurdin (Deputy President); Security Division’s Senior Security Officer Sarianshah Shamsudin (Secretary); and Bursary’s Assistant Registrar, Hayati Salleh Baihaki who is also the Assistant Secretary. The post of Bursar is held by the Bursar Department’s Assistant Bursar, Mohd Nazir Manan who retained his said post for the second term.

The UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah who officiated at the event said that the university supported the activities of PPUMS which he said would give a high impact to the university, community and nation. He also hoped that PPUMS would continue to play its role in being more active and to foster good relations with the surrounding community.

“The strength of an association is not on its supreme leader, or its members. It should be supported with strong financial resources. Programmes which are income generating to the association should be well planned and made into reality,” he urged.

He later presented certificates of appreciation to the previous line-up of PPUMS for the Session 2011/2013, besides breaking fast with the members. - FL

The Academic Services Division (BPA) of this EcoCampus University in a statement said that the online registration has been opened since 15 July.

The registration is opened until 25 August and can be accessed through UMS’ portal at www.ums.edu.my. Applicants are also urged to complete the registration process including payments and to avoid registering at the last minute to prevent congestion of the online registration system. - FL

pos bergerakTHURSDAY, 18 JULYStaff and students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) can now enjoy services offered by Pos Malaysia Berhad through the ‘Post on Wheel’ service which makes its presence every Friday at the Main Campus of this EcoCampus University. This is an initiative undertaken by the Postal Administration Section, Registrar Department UMS in an effort to ease postal management besides cutting down on time and cost by not having to go to the Main Post Office in town.

According to the Assistant Administrative Officer of the section Norazah Hamzah, she said that at present the opening hours are from 2.00 pm – 4.30 pm where the service will be at the lobby of UMS Library.

“In future, we intend to have the same service at other JSPIU Buildings by rotation depending on suitability and weather conditions. The surrounding communities are also welcome to make use of this service,” she said when met by Corporate Reporter in Kota Kinabalu.

She added that the mobile post office services include road tax renewal, car insurance renewal, utility bills payment, postal order, Western Union besides Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB) and Amanah Saham Nasional (ASN).

“At the same time, the mobile post office also offers other postal products such as stamps, Pos Laju, Pos Express and Registered Post,” she added.

buku crop1WEDNESDAY, 17 JULYUniversiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is having a book exhibition and sale at the Kent Teachers’ Training Institute (IPG), Tuaran starting yesterday. According to UMS Publication Unit Publication Officer, Anicius Justin Adeh, the book exhibition and sale is open as early as 8.30 am and will last till this Friday.

He said the exhibition is to promote new books published by UMS Publisher especially books on education. It also acts to promote extensively research done by UMS academicians, to the public aiming at educators thus helping to reinforce UMS as a publisher of academic-based books, he said when met by reporters in Kota Kinabalu.

He added that UMS through the Publication Unit will also be having the same book exhibition and sale at IPG Tawau on 23 -26 July and IPG Keningau 29 - 31 July. All are welcome. - FL

enactus juaraTUESDAY, 16 JULYUniversiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) once again displayed an excellent achievement when they defended their title as the champion at the Enactus (Entrepreneurial. Action. Us) Malaysia National Exposition (EMNE 2013) which was held at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in Kuala Lumpur recently.

The UMS Enactus team edged the Enactus teams of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) at the Finals making UMS champs for two years running. The victory once again enabled UMS to represent Malaysia at the Enactus World Cup Competition which will be held at Cancun, Mexico on 29 September until 1 October this year.

According to a team member Celine Alexandra, the community project presented by the UMS Enactus team attracted the attention of the judges. Celine, who is also the Director of the Payao project said it had attracted many followers as it involved the efforts of the Mabul Island community in increasing their catch thus generating a higher income.

Another project which was presented was the ‘Unfold’ Project which helps the Underpriviledged (OKU) and the poor. The Director of the project, Aarston Friend Dickson expressed his appreciation because the project was well received by the judges and members of Enactus Malaysia.

“We would like to thank Enactus Malaysia for organising this EMNE Competition; we were able to share our experience to help with the underpriviledged here in Sabah,” he added.

The Director of the Entrepreneurial Development Centre Student Affairs and Alumni (HEPA), Mat Salleh Hj. Ayub also expressed his appreciation and gratitute to the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of HEPA, Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Hj. Kasim Hj. Md Mansur for their support towards the team.

“We would also like to thank the Director of Labuan International Campus UMS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali, Alumni and all those who had in one way or another rendered their assistance, thus helping the team win the competition this year,” he said.

The competition, which was formerly known as Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) was participated by 28 teams which represented their own public and private higher learning institutions. This yearly competition organised by Yayasan Enactus Malaysia aims to highlight the creativity and innovation on community projects by university students in this country, among others. A total of 12 UMS students who took part in this competition ensured that the champion trophy belongs to the UMS Enactus team. – FL
