uniszaKHAMIS, 28 FEBRUARI 2013 - Terkenal dengan keindahan landskap yang memukau, kampus Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) terus mendapat tumpuan pelawat dari dalam dan luar negara. Hari ini, UMS sekali lagi menerima rombongan seramai 21 orang pelawat dari Fakulti Kontemporari Islam, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Terengganu.

Rombongan tersebut diketuai oleh Timbalan Naib Canselor (Akademik dan Antarabangsa) UniSZA, Prof. Dr. Amran Ahmed dan disertai oleh Dekan dan Timbalan Dekan fakulti tersebut serta beberapa kakitangan pentadbiran.

Menurut Prof. Dr. Amran Ahmed, kunjungan rombongan tersebut diharap dapat menjalinkan hubungan baik di antara kedua-dua universiti agar dapat saling bertukar idea untuk pembangunan universiti.

Antara pengisian lawatan itu termasuklah melawat ke Akuarium dan Muzium Marin di Institut Penyelidikan Marin Borneo (IPMB), serta kunjungan ke Muzium UMS selain taklimat mengenai kampus universiti tersebut.

Hadir sama menyambut rombongan itu, Pengarah Pusat Alumni, Jabatan Hal Ehwal Pelajar dan Alumni, Prof. Madya Dr. Mahmud Sudin dan Timbalan Pendaftar di Jabatan Pendaftar UMS, Norti Hj. Sirin. Mereka turut menyampaikan taklimat universiti kepada rombongan UniSZA.

ISFPRABU, 27 FEBRUARI 2013 - Program Asasi Pelajar Antarabangsa (ISFP) yang ditawarkan oleh Pusat Pembangunan Profesional UMS Link (UCPD) sekali lagi mendapat sambutan menggalakkan daripada penuntut luar negara.

Terbaru, bertempat di Bangunan Canselori Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), seramai 25 orang pelajar dari negara China mendaftar untuk mengikuti kursus jangka singkat bagi program persediaan Bahasa Inggeris.

Menurut Pegawai Eksekutif Hal Ehwal Pelajar UMS Link, Sheir Musa, sesi pendaftaran yang bermula pukul 9:00 pagi sehingga 12:00 tengah hari itu turut merangkumi pembayaran yuran pengajian, maklumat pertukaran wang pelajar serta taklimat dan pengenalan tentang kampus UMS.

“Kursus pembelajaran akan dijalankan selama enam bulan bermula 1 Mac 2013. Setelah tamat lulus pengajian, pelajar boleh meneruskan pengajian di UMS mengikut kursus yang mereka pilih,” katanya.

Program ISFP dirangka untuk penuntut antarabangsa yang ingin melanjutkan pengajian di peringkat Sarjana dan Ijazah Sarjana Muda di setiap institusi pengajian tinggi di dalam dan luar negara yang menggunakan bahasa Inggeris sebagai medium pengantara.

UNICEF UMSTUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26 - UMS has been given the honour to conduct an evaluation on behalf of The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Malaysia on the ‘Reaching the Unreached: An Alternative Education Programme for Refugees, Undocumented and Stateless Children in Kampung Numbak, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah’.

Competing nationally for this prestigious honour, the UMS team led by Prof Vincent Pang, outbidded the other rival universities with its winning proposal. The other key members of the UMS team include Dr Lee Kean Wah, Madam Ng Shi Ing, and Ms Crispina Gregory K Han, from the School of Education and Social Development. Besides these core members, the UMS team is also ably supported by other associate members and students from the School of Education and Social Development (SPPS), and the Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language Learning (PPIB). The fund allocated for this research amounted to RM88,000. The evaluation project is scheduled to be completed by May 2013.

The education center in Kg. Numbak , Kota Kinabalu, Sabah is a first initiative by UNICEF in collaboration with Ministry of Education, and the Sabah Special Task Force to provide access to basic education for out-of-school children in line with the principles of ensuring education for all children irrespective of religion, race, location, or citizenship status. The Numbak Educare Centre was established in 2011 in response to the needs of United Nation’s Article 28 (1)(a) Conventions on the Rights of the Child.

Since its inception, the Centre has been responsible for pioneering the implementation of an Alternative Education Programme (AEP) for the stateless and undocumented children. As the principal financier backer, UNICEF was interested to find out the extent of the impact of the AEP on this particular community. The evaluation was thus commissioned to meet the objectives of providing knowledge about the experience, lessons learnt and outcomes from the conception of the project up to the present time that UNICEF, MoE, Sabah Special Task Force and other education stakeholders can use as evidence for advocacy work and in the design of the Alternative Education Policy.

To evaluate the programme, the UMS team employs aparticipatory evaluation (PE) methodology based on a mixture of quantitative and qualitative, primary and secondary information sources. The participatory approach research method is appropriate because it takes into consideration the focal shift of Social Sciences research from the exclusive use of experimental designs to demonstrate the effectiveness of specific interventions and to foster their adoption in other settings (Patton, 1986). The evaluation process is scheduled to take place for six months. The evaluation is divided into two stages and includes both formative and summative evaluation and involving both qualitative and quantitative methods.

The first stage includes reviewing and analysis of existing government policy on Alternative Education and the programme documents and social visit to the community of implementation. During this stage, stated objectives, intended outcomes, and criteria for this programme as well as the norms and standards of the United Nations Evaluation group will be referred to develop evaluation instruments. The categories of evaluation will revolve around five key criteria, namely relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, outcome, and sustainability of the programme particularly from the perspective of gender and human rights.

The second stage looks at data collection through implementation of the evaluation instruments to the community of implementation. During this stage, the research team will enter the community of implementation daily to record and document data and facilitate reflection and feedback on the decided criteria. Besides that, planned interviews will be carried out with stakeholders involved in this programme.

The evaluation instruments will be visual reflections by the school children, focus group dialogue with the community, semi-structured interviews with government officials, community leaders, NGO representative, development partners, teachers, parents and school children; andcase studies of selected children’s life success stories.

The UMS team hopes to gather relevant information to document the AEP implementation process, its advantages, drawbacks and effects, through document analysis, interviews with participating stakeholders and participant observations.Findings from the evaluation report will be used by UNICEF Malaysia as evidence for advocacy work and propagating the Alternative Education policy to further improve the education provision for different groups of marginalized children in Malaysia.

Pasca PendaftaramISNIN, 25 FEBRUARI - Seramai 245 orang pelajar baharu pascasiswazah Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) telah mendaftar dalam pelbagai bidang pengajian bagi kemasukan semester 2 sesi 2012/2013.

Sesi pendaftaran yang diadakan baru-baru ini di Kompleks Dewan Kuliah Pusat UMS selama dua hari menyaksikan kehadiran pelajar-pelajar baharu daripada pelbagai peringkat usia dan latar belakang.

Menurut Penolong Pendaftar Kanan Pusat Pengajian Pascasiswazah UMS, Alna Tugon berkata, para pelajar tersebut kemudiannya mengikuti Taklimat Universiti dan Kursus Metadologi untuk persediaan dalam menempuhi alam kehidupan sebagai penuntut pascasiswazah di UMS.

Katanya, ianya merupakan satu detik permulaan penting bagi pelajar baharu ke arah memperjuangkan budaya pembelajaran sepanjang hayat tanpa mengira umur dan pangkat.

Dalam pada itu, Dekan Pusat Pengajian Pascasiswazah UMS, Prof. Datin Dr. Mariam Abd.Latip turut mengalu-alukan kehadiran semua pelajar baharu pascasiswazah UMS.

Katanya, pihak universiti sangat berbangga kerana dapat membantu para pelajar sekalian untuk meningkatkan ilmu sekaligus menyahut saranan kerajaan terhadap pemerkasaan modal insan melalui pembelajaran secara berterusan. Ia juga selari dengan matlamat UMS untuk menjadi pusat kecemerlangan akademik yang bertaraf dunia.

“Pihak kami percaya bahawa usaha untuk meningkatkan ilmu ini dapat menyumbang kepada peningkatan kumpulan cendekiawan dan juga meningkatkan produktiviti masing-masing sejajar dengan pembangunan sosioekonomi Negara,” katanya.

Delegasi MPPISNIN, 18 FEBRUARI 2013 - Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar (MPP) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Sesi 2012/2013 telah menjalankan program kunjungan Delegasi Bayu baru-baru ini.

Menurut Pegawai Psikologi Kanan Jabatan Hal Ehwal Pelajar dan Alumni UMS, Masnahneh Masdin, program selama 12 hari itu telah menjelajah ke seluruh universiti awam di Semenanjung Malaysia dengan membawa objektif untuk menjalinkan hubungan diplomatik dengan IPTA yang terlibat.

Antara universiti awam yang dilawati termasuklah Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) dan Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

 “Selain itu, program ini juga mampu mewujudkan rangkaian jalinan pertukaran sumber ilmu dari segi kepimpinan, akademik dan diplomatik antara pemimpin mahasiswa,” katanya yang juga merupakan pegawai pengiring program tersebut.

Menurutnya, selain memperkenalkan MPP UMS kepada pemimpin pelajar di setiap IPTA itu, program tersebut juga turut diisi dengan sesi dialog untuk tujuan perkongsian maklumat dan membincangkan isu-isu semasa berkaitan dengan mahasiswa.

Delegasi UMS yang disertai seramai 24 orang MPP dan dua pegawai pengiring turut mengadakan kunjungan ke Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi, Biro Tatanegara dan Jabatan Perdana Menteri. Rombongan itu juga berkesempatan mengadakan perjumpaan dengan Perdana Menteri Malaysia,  Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak.
