raya ums2013WEDNESDAY, 28 AUGUSTUMS Eid al-Fitr Open House was celebrated with much joy this morning with the involvement of 31 booths from Departments, Schools, Centres, Institute and Unit at UMS Lecture Hall Complex.

Adopting the EcoCampus theme, the open house was attended by the Head of State Tun Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Juhar Datuk Haji Mahiruddin and wife, Toh Puan Datuk Seri Panglima Hajah Norlidah Datuk R. M. Jasni.

The open house saw the School of Psychology and Social Works (SPKS) emerged as Champion in the Best Booth Competition. They received cash prize of RM1,500.00 and a certificate. They also won the Most Popular Booth, bringing home a plaque and certificate for their effort.

The second place went to the School of Arts (SPS) whilst the Institute of Tropical Biology and Conservation (IBTP) claimed the third spot. Both received cash prize of RM1,000 and RM500.00 and a certificate respectively.

Also present was the Federal Secretary Sabah, Dato’ Abu Bakar Hassan, UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah, Group Chairman of UMSLink Holdings, Datuk Ag. Buhtamam Ag. Mahmun and UMS Registrar, Datuk Abdullah Hj. Mohd. Said who was the Organising Chairman of the event. - FL

UMS-SABAH PORTTUESDAY, 27 AUGUSTUMS through the Borneo Marine Research Institute (IPMB) today received a contribution from the Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB) to finance two research projects relating to marine conservation.

The contribution was one of the Corporate Social Responsibilities of SPSB to the marine ecosystem conservation of the two projects managed by IPMB.

This joint cooperation was affirmed in an event at UMS Galeri, Chancellery Building of this EcoCampus University which saw the Managing Director of SPSB, Datuk Dr. Mohd. Fowzi Razi handing over a mock cheque amounting to RM75,000 to the Director of the Strategic and Academic Development Centre (PPSA) UMS, Prof. Dr. Marcus Jopony who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah.

Through this cooperation, SPSB will finance a sum of RM25,000 to the ‘Ecological Connectivity of Coral Reef, Seagrass and Mangrove Ecosystems’ headed by Dr. Abentin Estim.

Meanwhile, a sum of RM50,000 will finance the research project ‘Monitoring of Reef Status and Determining the Feasibility of Coral Restoration In Sepangar Bay’ headed by Muhammad Ali.

Also present at the function was the Director of IPMB, Prof. Dr. Saleem Mustafa and staff of SPSB and UMS. - FL

vc rtmMONDAY, 26 AUGUSTUniversiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah paid a courtesy call to the Director of the Broadcasting Department (RTM) Sabah, Abdul Jalani Mahmud in Kota Kinabalu recently.

The call was to discuss collaborations which involved this EcoCampus University with the Broadcasting Station which will be celebrating their 67th anniversary this year.

Among the topics discussed included a joint cooperation in the setting up of a new Science and Technology Preparatory Centre (PPST) UMS.

At the same time, the courtesy call was done to strengthen the long term relationship between both parties.

Also present was the Director of PPST UMS, Dr. Sazmal Effendi and UMS Deputy Bursar, Hj. Firdaus Abdullah, including the Assistant Director (Engineering and Radio), Hj. Ismail Seman. - FL

imageSATURDAY, 24 AUGUST - Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor last night held a Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house for Heads of Departments, Schools, Centres, Institutes and Units (JSPIU) of UMS at his official residence at Kingfisher Sulaman.
 
More than 100 people attended the open house which consisted of Heads of JSPIU, along with their families.

This open house was seen as an opportune time to mingle and share updates among families and friends of UMS staff.
 
Also invited to the function was State Assembly Speaker, Datuk Seri Panglima Salleh Tun Said Keruak and wife Datin Seri Panglima Raya Erom.

BPA-PaparFRIDAY, 23 AUGUST12 students from poor families received their letter of offer to further their tertiary education at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) at the Papar District Office today. The number comprised seven students from Papar, three from Beaufort and two from Sipitang.

The handing over of the offer letter was done by the Assistant Officer of the district’s Development Division, Adnan Takin.

Speaking at the event, he said UMS and the Education Ministry’s effort to help the underpriviledged was timely in ensuring that the poor would have an opportunity to further their studies to a higher level.

“I urged those students who are receiving their letter of offer to make full use of this opportunity which would help to transform their standard of living in future,” he said. Also present was UMS Assistant Bursar, William Aloysius Jr, Assistant Registrar of the Academic Services Division (BPA), Riniwati Raksan and BPA’s Assistant Administrator Ahmad Saprawan Roslee.

A briefing was then held on the forthcoming Orientation Week for new intake on 01 September.

In a related development, two students from Tamparuli also received their letter of offer which was presented by Tuaran Member of Parliament, Datuk Madius Tangau.

In Kota Belud, 14 students from poor families also received their letter of offer to this EcoCampus University.

The handing over of offer letters will continue tomorrow until Sunday in the Interior, West Coast North and East Coast. – FL
