THURSDAY, 30 APRIL – A “Where is the Voice of Justice” programme was recently organised by the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to encourage their students to think out of the box.
The freedom to criticise, brainstorm and express critical views by the students clearly showed their experience through the expression of more mature minds during the question and answer session.
A three panel member consisting of third year students, Wan Hasmie Wan Zu, Nurza Safida Sapawi and Nor Amiza Abdul Wahad and a moderator, Mohd Sarifudin Othman also provided an in-depth analysis on the issue of justice, besides answering questions in a creative, critical and comprehensive way.
Touching on current issues pertaining to justice internally and abroad, the programme was seen to have an impact on increasing knowledge for the students and to express their long suppressed views and unwrapping all questions related to justice.
Also present at the programme were FKSW lecturers, Lokman Abdul Samad, Suhaimi Mohd Yasin, Saniah Ahmad and Mohd Shahrudin Zainal and a tutor in Writing, Jasman Bandar who were on hand to guide the students in organising such programme that would enhance thinking among students. - (fl)

WEDNESDAY, 29 APRIL – Chairman of the Board of Directors of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Tun Zaki Tun Azmi recently paid a visit to UMS Seaweed cultivation in the waters of Semporna, Sabah.During the visit, he expressed satisfaction over the developments of the seaweed cultivation and farming in Semporna as it helped derived good income for the local communities involved.
“UMS should have a partnership programme with the local communities so as to garner more productivity, a win-win situation for both sides,” he suggested.
Meanwhile, Head of the Seaweed Research Unit, Associate Professor Dr. Suhaimi Md Yasir said, the many seaweed species farmed at Semporna were on high demand, adding that they produced about 100 to 200 metric tonnes every 45 days.
“In keeping to its EcoCampus University status, UMS uses marine-polymer instead of plastic bottles to farm seaweed thus protecting the corals underneath the sea,” he added.
The seaweed cultivation started in 2010 and headed by Dr. Suhaimi who is also a lecturer from the Faculty of Sciences and Natural Resources.– FL

WEDNESDAY, 29 APRIL – The Sungkai National Seminar was a platform to introduce another product that has the potential to develop this state through crop plantation and forestry plantation concept.According to the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah, the seminar aimed to provide knowledge and share ideas regarding the Sungkai tree, technology, usability and economic potential of the Sungkai tree cultivation.
Even though the research on Sungkai tree is still new in Malaysia, it has the potential to be developed as the main component in manufacturing high quality furniture, sports equipment, decorative veneer and cabinets.
The seminar was organised in this country for the first time involving presentations by speakers from Indonesia and government agencies including private firms that focused on the technological aspect of cultivation, tree growth, potential use of the tree and economic potential from the Sungkai tree.
He said this at the opening ceremony of the Sungkai National Seminar at the Postgraduate Auditorium UMS in Kota Kinabalu.
His speech was read by the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences and Natural Resources, UMS, Professor Dr. Baba Musta.
With the theme “Sungkai- Forest Plantation of the Future” Seminar 2 was attended by almost 200 researchers and players in the timber and forest industry of the country.
It was officiated by the Assistant Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Minister, Datuk Haji Sairin Karno.
The seminar was organised by the Faculty of Sciences and Natural Resources, UMS; Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM); Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) and Sabapuri Nursery Sabah (SNS). – SS (fl)

WEDNESDAY, 29 APRIL – Open Day @ E organised by the Student Welfare Community Committee Exco (JAKMAS) Residential College E Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was abuzz with various activities organised throughout the programme yesterday.
It included a street soccer, cake decorating contest and best booth contest by clubs of Residential College E, besides blood donation activity in collaboration with Likas Hospital for Women and Children.
The official closing ceremony was officiated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Student Affairs and Alumni UMS, Assoc. Professor Dr. Ismail Ali at Anjung Siswa, Student Affairs Department Building UMS.
In his speech, he praised College E’s management in organising programmes aimed at establishing unity and build students' critical thinking and creativity.
“This effort is in line with the 10 shifts outlined in the Malaysian Education Development Plan (Higher Education) that touched on the aspect of Holistic, Entrepreneurial and Balanced Graduates through the university’s curriculum,” he said.
He added that in addition to helping to resolve problems encountered at the residential college, JAKMAS also played an important role in conducting this programme.
The Open Day @ E was an initiative in introducing student’s activities and achievements attained by Residential College E, in addition to being a platform in fostering ties among students. - (fl)

TUESDAY, 28 APRIL – The Psychology, Education and Sports Students Association (PERMAPPS) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently organised the Faculty of Psychology and Education Session 2014/2015 Mega Carnival.Deputy Dean (Student Affairs and Alumni) Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP), Associate Professor Dr. Suyansah Swanto said the programme aimed to foster closer ties with the faculty staff and students besides improving soft skills of students through activities.
“In addition to giving students the opportunity to engage directly in the organising of the programme, this carnival is a benchmark for the faculty itself in organising this carnival that brings together all faculty members in a variety of activities,” he said when launching the programme.
He added, the three-day programme, which was attended by about 200 students would hopefully be continued to form cooperation between staff and students in organising such event.
Among the activities held during the carnival included Poetry Festival, Coffee Talk Debate, book fair, health fair and funfair. – (fl)
