Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) continues to strengthen its role as a regional hub for tropical research and sustainability by hosting the 8th Borneo Studies Network (BSN) Scientific Committee Meeting, which brings together 12 universities and researchers from Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia.
The two day programme serves as an important platform to strengthen cross border scientific collaboration, align strategic research agendas and enhance knowledge sharing towards a sustainable future for Borneo.
Chairman of the BSN Scientific Committee, Dr. Haji Abdul Hanif Dato Paduka Haji Mahadi, said the network is now entering a new phase with greater emphasis on impactful research and more substantive academic collaboration.
According to Hanif, among the network’s key priorities are strengthening researcher and student mobility, expanding international collaborations and developing more sustainable inter institutional research initiatives.
“Academic mobility remains one of the most valuable aspects of BSN. However, challenges such as visa procedures, travel costs and geopolitical constraints require a more flexible and practical collaborative approach.
“We need to explore new approaches including joint supervision of research students, collaborative grant applications, short term research placements and more effective use of digital platforms,” he said.
Hanif added that BSN is also expanding opportunities for broader international collaboration as issues related to biodiversity, climate change and sustainable development are global challenges requiring collective participation.
Meanwhile, UMS Vice Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Kasim Haji Mansor, said the coming together of higher education institutions under the BSN network reflects a shared commitment towards protecting Borneo’s biodiversity and ecosystems, which are recognised among the oldest in the world.
“Borneo is not merely an island, but a global treasure endowed with rich biodiversity, indigenous cultures and critical ecosystems that play a significant role in maintaining global environmental balance.
“However, the region is currently facing various challenges including climate change, infrastructure development and shifting economic landscapes that require strategic cooperation among research institutions across Borneo.
“BSN is not just an ordinary academic network, but a strategic necessity to ensure that the flow of knowledge, research and innovation can be strengthened across national borders,” he added.
He said this during the opening ceremony of the 8th BSN Scientific Committee Meeting held at Dewan Bankuasi, UMS, on Wednesday.
His speech text was delivered by the Director of the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ITBC) UMS, Associate Professor Dr. Fiffy Hanisdah Saikim.
Kasim added that through the participation of leading universities in Borneo, the network is capable of producing high impact research that can assist governments, industries and communities in shaping sustainable development for the region.
“The challenges of the 21st century require higher education institutions to strengthen cross disciplinary collaboration through joint research initiatives, shared laboratory facilities, field expeditions as well as enhanced student and academic mobility programmes.
“We want every research effort undertaken not only to contribute to the advancement of knowledge, but also to directly benefit the communities of Borneo,” he said.
The meeting also featured strategic presentations from BSN’s principal research clusters covering Borneo biodiversity, cultural heritage and ethnic groups, sustainable community transformation, renewable energy and material sciences, as well as business and economics.
Apart from the scientific discussions, delegates are also scheduled to visit the BorlIS Living Lab in Sunduan Nabalu, Tuaran as part of the Networking Day programme, which highlights community innovation and biodiversity based sustainability initiatives.
