Welcome to the Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). We are excited that you are visiting our website.
Located on the beautiful coastline of Kota Kinabalu, the University is an exciting place to be because it provides an eco-friendly environment. The faculty’s website would become the best place to information about the course of studies in UMS. It focuses on the latest and most important information on the academic programmes encompassing 6 (Six) engineering undergraduate degrees in Civil, Chemical, Mechanical, Electronics (Computer), Electrical & Electronics, and the recent one is Oil and Gas Engineering program. In addition, Diploma in Oil & Gas Engineering is also offered for embracing the whole spectrum of O&G stream in UMS. All of programs are accredited by the board of Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC), Malaysia which means that our programs are recognized nationally and internationally by any signatories’ countries of the Washington Accord.
For graduate degrees, Doctor of Philosophy (by research), Master of Engineering (by research), and Master of Engineering in Oil and Gas (by coursework) are offered. The faculty aims to produce excellent graduates who have particular expertise in the field of engineering through a conducive environment in teaching and learning. In order to nurture the research environment, FKJ has established 3 research units namely Artificial Intelligence (AiRU), Material & Mineral (MMRU) and Energy Research Unit (ERU). The faculty implemented an outcome-based education (OBE) that focuses on student-centered learning outcomes. We take pride in our students and alumni that have demonstrated outstanding achievement and academic excellence.
Our academic staffs are actively engaged in academics, research, and development by securing numerous University, National, Industry and International research grants. In line with University’s visions and philosophies to achieve international recognition, FKJ focused its strength to venture into advanced research such as advanced membrane, nanofluids/nanoparticles, advanced material, artificial intelligence, product formulation, nanoelectronics, and others that have vast implications in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). As Sabah is a state that has abundant land which is rich in natural resources as well as a significant coastline, FKJ will make this aspect of Sabah as a research impetus. Among the research, the focus will be extraction and refining of the resources of the forest and sea, environmental engineering such as industrial wastewater treatment, basic infrastructure development research such as transportation system for the sea, air and land, and intelligent safety control system to monitor erosion at the wide coastal borders.
FKJ also plays an important role in the realization of the university’s vision as a people’s university. In this context, FKJ has planned its strength to execute research in developing the community’s quality of life. To achieve this objective, FKJ utilized a “development of life quality based on local resources” approach. This objective will be implemented by integrating advanced research technologies to develop local resources, for instance, development of renewable energy research such as solar energy, wind energy as well as wave and gravity energy, housing development research based on local resources, the application of nanotechnology to produce clean water and the application of existing technology to increase the production of small-scale industries. It is the Faculty’s hope to become a leader in developing local resources to increase the economic level of community and to become the preferred educational hub for the student from neighboring countries such as Negara Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and all the countries in the Asia Pacific region.
