KOTA KINABALU, 14 June 2026 – A total of 52 Mechanical Engineering students from the Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) gained valuable learning experience beyond the classroom through the Service Learning Malaysia–University for Society (SULAM) programme conducted at Kampung Natai, Telipok. The programme, entitled “Learning the Piping System for a Gravity-Fed Continuous-Flow Aquaculture Tank,” was implemented through the KM21003 Fluid Mechanics 2 course for Semester 2, Academic Session 2025/2026 under the supervision of Dr. Mohd Kamel Wan Ibrahim.

SINGAPORE, 8 May 2026 – The Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), strengthened its regional presence in sustainable energy and green finance through recognition at the ESG & Sustainability Excellence Awards 2026, held in conjunction with Green Finance Week Asia 2026 in Singapore. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Kamal Mohd Shah from the Microgrid Laboratory Research Group, FKJ, UMS, received the ESG & Sustainable Finance Innovation Leader of the Year Award in recognition of his leadership and contribution towards integrating engineering innovation, environmental sustainability and sustainable finance. A key development associated with this recognition is the smart grid ecosystem for microgrid infrastructure developed by the Microgrid Laboratory Research Group.

KOTA KINABALU, 19 April 2026 – The Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), continued to strengthen its commitment to environmental sustainability through a beach clean-up initiative led by the Civil Engineering Club (CEC) at ODEC Beach, UMS. The programme was organised under the leadership of Programme Director Nurin Syazwana binti Muslihin and CEC President Meloney Diva binti Patrick, in collaboration with EcoCampus, Trash Hero, Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (DBKK) and UMS Beach Club.

KOTA BELUD, 14 February 2026 – The Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), successfully marked another milestone in community sustainability through the official launch of the Kg Kiau Nuluh Community Composting Site. The ceremony was officiated by Datuk Ewon Benedick, Deputy Chief Minister III of Sabah and Minister of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport Sabah.

KOTA KINABALU, 13 February 2026 – The Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), together with UScience and in collaboration with SMK Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu, successfully conducted the STI*100 Programme themed “Zero Waste Challenge: Creative & Innovative with STI!”. The programme aimed to strengthen students’ awareness and interest in science, technology, innovation and environmental sustainability.

SINGAPORE, 5 February 2026 – The Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), achieved regional recognition at The Solar Project Construction Asia 2026 Awards, organised by SolarQuarter at Four Points by Sheraton Singapore, Riverview. Two researchers associated with research on sustainable microgrid systems received awards in recognition of their contributions to renewable energy, microgrid development and sustainable energy solutions.

KOTA KINABALU, 2 February 2026 – The Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), in collaboration with the local community and under the supervision of the Pusat Kelestarian Libatsama Masyarakat UMS, successfully conducted a Solar and Aquaponics Knowledge Transfer Programme at Kampung Darau. The initiative aimed to equip the community with practical knowledge and skills in renewable energy, aquaponics and sustainable food production.

KOTA BELUD, 17 January 2026 – The Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), through MyKompos Lab (Advanced Composting and Waste Management), successfully conducted a knowledge transfer programme on composting as an income-generating resource for the community of Kg Kiau Nuluh, Kota Belud.

The Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), Universiti Malaysia Sabah, through the Living Lab UMS @ Pantai Dalit initiative, successfully conducted the MyKompos@Pantai Dalit Program on 18 October 2025 in Kampung Berungis, Tuaran. The programme was officiated by Yang Berbahagia Datuk Seri Panglima Abdul Rahman Dahlan, Chairman of the UMS Board of Directors, represented by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Abu Zahrim Yaser, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Head of MyKompos Lab.

On 24 August 2025, the Kembara Ilmu KESSA 2025: Air Kitani, Tanggungjawab Bersama Bah! program was held in Beaufort, Sabah. The event, organized by the Water Resources and Hydrology Management Division (BPSAH), Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia, with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), gathered students and local communities to learn about sustainable water and environmental practices.

14 August 2025 — A groundbreaking research initiative led by the Microgrid Laboratory Research Group, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), has been awarded the prestigious Malaysia Sustainable Leadership Award 2025 in the category of Green Technology Innovation – Sustainability Team of the Year.

PENAMPANG, 1 July 2025 – In collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering, the Student Representative Council (MPP) of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), together with the EcoCampus Department and the Innovation Unit, organized a community awareness program to promote innovation and sustainability.

The Program 1 Fakulti 1 Komuniti, held on 14 June 2025 at Taman Budaya dan Inovasi Kundasang (TABIK), Sabah, was a significant step forward in promoting sustainability at the grassroots level. Organized by the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in collaboration with the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), the event represented another milestone in the ongoing partnership with the Kundasang community that began in 2019.
