Published: 3 July 2025
The Program 1 Fakulti 1 Komuniti, held on 14 June 2025 at Taman Budaya dan Inovasi Kundasang (TABIK), Sabah, was a significant step forward in promoting sustainability at the grassroots level. Organized by the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in collaboration with the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), the event represented another milestone in the ongoing partnership with the Kundasang community that began in 2019.
Officiated by Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Abu Zahrim Yaser, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, UMS, on behalf of the UMS Vice-Chancellor, the program brought together 45 participants, including local residents, researchers, staff, and final-year chemical engineering students.
The program’s highlights included a knowledge-sharing session and a gotong-royong activity at the composting site. Two talks were delivered, focusing on sustainable compost site management and the application of compost leachate as a liquid nutrient to enhance plant growth.
This ongoing initiative supports the long-term sustainability of the Kundasang Community Composting Site, established in 2021. It reflects UMS’s strong commitment to environmental stewardship, circular waste management, and sustainable agriculture.
