14 August 2025 — A groundbreaking research initiative led by the Microgrid Laboratory Research Group, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), has been awarded the prestigious Malaysia Sustainable Leadership Award 2025 in the category of Green Technology Innovation – Sustainability Team of the Year.

The award recognizes the success of the Sustainable Microgrid Framework, a project that began in 2023 and has since evolved into a model for sustainable energy solutions. The framework was developed as part of a PhD research project headed by Prof. Madya Dr. Mohd Kamal Mohd Shah, in collaboration with industry partners.
Adapted to support the Sustainable Green Island Framework Project, the microgrid model integrates renewable energy technologies and smart grid innovations to promote energy resilience and environmental sustainability, particularly in island and rural communities.
“This recognition is a testament to the dedication and collaborative spirit of our research team and partners,” said Prof. Madya Dr. Kamal. “It reflects UMS’s commitment to advancing green technology and contributing to Malaysia’s sustainable development goals.”
The award ceremony, held at Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur, brought together leaders in sustainability, innovation, and academia. UMS’s achievement highlights the university’s growing role in shaping the future of green energy and smart infrastructure in the region.
Special thanks to the Dean of FKJ and all parties involvedfor their support and collaboration, which contributed to the successful development of this PhD research project.
