SINGAPORE, 5 February 2026 – The Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), achieved regional recognition at The Solar Project Construction Asia 2026 Awards, organised by SolarQuarter at Four Points by Sheraton Singapore, Riverview. Two researchers associated with research on sustainable microgrid systems received awards in recognition of their contributions to renewable energy, microgrid development and sustainable energy solutions. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Kamal Bin Mohd Shah received the Sustainability & Safety Leadership Award for his work on Sustainable Microgrid Systems for Remote & Island Communities. The recognition highlights research efforts towards developing reliable and sustainable energy systems for communities where conventional electricity infrastructure may be limited or difficult to access.

The research focuses on a Sustainable Microgrid Ecosystem, with particular consideration given to the integration of renewable energy, system resilience and safety. Such microgrid approaches have the potential to support more reliable electricity access for remote and island communities while reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuel-based energy sources. In a second recognition, Dato' Prof. Dr. Ir. Ts. Zahari Bin Hj Dollah received the Technology Innovation Award for his leadership in Smart Microgrid Strategy & Integrated Energy Architecture. The award recognised his contribution to the development of integrated energy system strategies and smart microgrid architecture for future renewable energy applications. These achievements demonstrate FKJ’s continued involvement in research addressing contemporary challenges in energy sustainability and energy access. They also reflect the importance of integrating engineering research, technology innovation and sustainable development in designing energy systems suitable for different communities and geographical needs.

The achievements are closely aligned with SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy through the advancement of renewable and accessible energy systems, and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure through the development of innovative microgrid technologies. The research also contributes to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, particularly for remote communities, and SDG 13: Climate Action through efforts to support the transition towards lower-carbon energy systems. Through these regional recognitions, FKJ continues to strengthen its research contribution in renewable energy, sustainable microgrids and integrated energy technologies at the regional level.
