KOTA KINABALU, 13 February 2026 – The Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), together with UScience and in collaboration with SMK Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu, successfully conducted the STI*100 Programme themed “Zero Waste Challenge: Creative & Innovative with STI!”. The programme aimed to strengthen students’ awareness and interest in science, technology, innovation and environmental sustainability. The three-day programme was held on 23 January, 26 January and 13 February 2026, involving 60 Form 2 and Form 3 students. The programme was led by Ts. Dr. Siti Nor Farhana Zakaria, with support from Cik Nur-Afini Septiyana Binti Normat and Cik Dg Masliah Marasuka.

Throughout the programme, students participated in a range of learning activities designed to expose them to the application of science and technology beyond the classroom. These included knowledge-sharing sessions, laboratory visits and innovation-based activities that encouraged students to explore scientific concepts while developing awareness of environmental issues and responsible resource use. The Zero Waste Challenge theme also provided an opportunity for students to relate science, technology and innovation to everyday environmental challenges. Through the activities, participants were encouraged to think creatively about waste reduction and the potential role of innovation in supporting more sustainable practices.

The programme contributes directly to SDG 4: Quality Education by providing experiential learning opportunities in science and sustainability, while SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure is reflected through the emphasis on creativity and technological innovation. Its focus on waste awareness supports SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, while environmental education contributes to SDG 13: Climate Action. The collaboration between FKJ, UScience and SMK Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu also supports SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. Through STI*100, FKJ continues to promote science, technology and sustainability education among school students while strengthening university-school engagement within Kota Kinabalu.
