FKJ Strengthens Community Sustainability Through the Launch of Kg Kiau Nuluh Composting Site

KOTA BELUD, 14 February 2026 – The Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), successfully marked another milestone in community sustainability through the official launch of the Kg Kiau Nuluh Community Composting Site. The ceremony was officiated by Datuk Ewon Benedick, Deputy Chief Minister III of Sabah and Minister of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport Sabah. Also present were Prof. Dr. Coswald Stephen Sipaut @ Mohd Nazri, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Industry and Community Network), representing UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof. Datuk Dr. Kasim Hj Mansor, and Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Abu Zahrim Bin Yaser, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. The programme began with a composting demonstration by members of the Kg Kiau Nuluh community who had previously participated in the knowledge transfer programme.

The demonstration showcased the preparation of compost mixtures using pineapple peel waste and other organic materials before being processed in the composting reactor. The initiative was implemented under MyKomposLab and Kundasang Compost Living Lab, led by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Abu Zahrim Bin Yaser together with Dr. Mariani Rajin, Dr. Nurhazwani Yusoff Azudin, Dr. Sariah Saalah, Dr. Ahmad Safwan Ismail and Puan Azreen Ibrahim. The official launch programme was chaired by Dr. Nurhazwani Yusoff Azudin. During the ceremony, Datuk Ewon Benedick also presented participation certificates to community members who completed the Knowledge Transfer Programme on Composting as an Income-Generating Resource for the Kg Kiau Nuluh Community.

The initiative demonstrates how university expertise can be translated into practical knowledge that supports waste utilisation, community empowerment and rural entrepreneurship. The project contributes to SDG 4: Quality Education through knowledge transfer, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth through community income opportunities, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production through organic waste utilisation. Through this initiative, FKJ continues to strengthen its role in translating engineering knowledge and innovation into sustainable solutions that create meaningful impact for communities in Sabah.
