FKJ SULAM Programme Brings Fluid Mechanics Learning into The Community at Kg. Natai

KOTA KINABALU, 14 June 2026 – A total of 52 Mechanical Engineering students from the Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) gained valuable learning experience beyond the classroom through the Service Learning Malaysia–University for Society (SULAM) programme conducted at Kampung Natai, Telipok. The programme, entitled “Learning the Piping System for a Gravity-Fed Continuous-Flow Aquaculture Tank,” was implemented through the KM21003 Fluid Mechanics 2 course for Semester 2, Academic Session 2025/2026 under the supervision of Dr. Mohd Kamel Wan Ibrahim. The students were supported by one lecturer and two laboratory staff members. The project focused on developing a gravity-fed continuous-flow aquaculture system, which uses the natural flow of water from higher ground without depending on mechanical pumps.
The system was introduced as a practical approach to support food security while providing a more suitable aquaculture option for a highland community. Through the project, students applied concepts learned in Fluid Mechanics 2, including Bernoulli’s Equation, flow rate analysis, energy losses in piping systems and flow control. They were also required to communicate technical concepts to the community, strengthening their teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills. According to Kampung Natai Village Head Encik Willie Jousip, the system has the potential to reduce community dependence on market fish supplies while providing a more sustainable fish farming alternative. The use of above-ground polyethylene tanks also reduces the need for earth ponds, which may help minimise erosion and slope-related risks. The programme was supported by Unit Pemimpin Pembangunan Masyarakat N18 Inanam, led by Tuan Nicho Unui, and funded by the UMS Centre for Academic Development and Excellence through the Dana Khas Kecemerlangan amounting to RM5,000.
The initiative contributes to SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. Through SULAM, FKJ continues to integrate engineering education with practical community-based solutions while developing technically competent and socially responsible graduates.
