FestkumFRIDAY, 28 FEBRUARY – Various activities were held in conjunction with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) 20th anniversary celebrations.

The latest being UMS chosen to host the Malaysian Universities Cultural Festival (FEStKUM).

The festival which runs until Monday was held at a few locations in and around Kota Kinabalu and Tuaran districts.

An ‘Evening of Show’ at the Tuaran Hall was held which had each Institution of Higher Learning (IPTA) participated in presenting their local cultural dances.

The uniqueness, including the movement of the dances presented was well received by the audience who gave a loud applause to the dancers.                                    

Eearlier, an Art Workshop was held in the morning involving participation of students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Badin, Tuaran.

An art exercise was also held, in addition to traditional sports and arts lectures which was presented by singer and composer, Datuk Suhaimi Md. Zain at the Teachers’ Training Institute (IPG) Kent, Tuaran.

The festival organised by the Malaysian Universities Cultural Council (MAKUM) will be officially opened by the Minister of Local Government and Housing Sabah who is also the State Assemblyman (ADUN) for Sulaman, Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Mohd. Noor tonight. – SS (FL)

KPMpicFRIDAY, 28 FEBRUARY – The government through the Ministry of Education (KPM) continues to promote the generation of knowledge that can contribute to an increased level of intellectuality as well as the creation of new technology.

For this purpose, KPM is offering the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) for the first phase in 2014 from 24 February onwards as an effort to acculturate research at institutions of higher learning.

According to a statement issued by the Centre for Research and Innovation (PPI) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), researchers who are interested can apply on-line by using the MyGRANT system to access the website http://mygrants.gov.my.

FRGS was first offered in 2006 and received overwhelming response from researchers. Thus, through the 10th Malaysia Plan (RMK10), a research fund of RM741 million was allocated to finance research including FRGS.

Closing date for the application of FRGS through on-line MyGRANTS system at PPI level is 31 March 2014 (Monday).

kelasseniTHURSDAY, 27 FEBRUARY – The School of Arts (SPS), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) welcomes the registration of children between the ages of eight and 10 who are interested to learn more about arts.

The class is a collaboration between SPS Entrepreneurship Club and Syarikat Anamika Sdn Bhd and offers programmes in arts such as vocal, Malay native dance, theatre, animation and painting.

According to a statement issued by SPS, the facilitators for the class are experienced SPS lecturers assisted by SPS students who are active in their own field.

The statement added that the monthly chargeable fee for the three hour class is RM100.00 and will be conducted every weekend.

The programme was organised in response to a call by the university to organise programmes which are not only value-added but could also generate income.

sumbangan banjirTHURSDAY, 27 FEBRUARYUniversiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) continued in their mission in helping to ease the plight of those affected by the recent floods which hit several districts in Sabah.

UMS, through the initiative of the Student Representatives Council (MPP) in collaboration with the Student Volunteers Foundation (YSS) made a contribution to a family in Beaufort who are now made homeless after being hit by the disaster which was considered to be the worst and destroyed their home.

Cash contributions including clothes were presented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Kasim Md Mansur to the Ambitung family at their temporary residence at the district’s Public Works Department quarters.

Also present was the Beaufort Member of Parliament’s (MP) Private Secretary, Faizal Arshad; Head of Student Affairs and Alumni UMS, Mohd. Raffie Hj Janau and MPP President, Fandyi Sanizan Jurup.

Meanwhile, Faizal also announced a special assistance from Beaufort MP, Datuk Azizah Mohd. Dun which was a construction of a house to accommodate the affected family who also had two children with disabilities (OKU).

She said with the existence of the house it would help ease their burden after having gone through a difficult time during the disaster which had claimed one life.

“We are grateful at UMS for their concern. UMS students will also lend a hand in the construction of the house,” she added. – SS (FL)

THURSDAY, 27 FEBRUARYUniversiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Bursar, Hj. Rizal Othman chaired the Institutions of Higher Learning (IPTA) Treasurers Meeting Bil. 1/2014 held at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor recently.

At the meeting, he raised some issues of financial management and income generation.

He also led the group on a working visit to the National Technological University (NTU), Singapore.

The visit was aimed at obtaining information on income-generating activities and financial sustainability of the institution as a reference that can be applied in universities across the country.

In the meantime, UTM Bursar, Sharifah Alwiah Syed Alwi also expressed her appreciation to the secretariat for selecting UTM as the host for the meeting.

The next meeting will be held at University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) in May 2014. – SS (FL)
