FRIDAY, 13 JUNE – ‘Kelab Suri Rumah dan Staf Wanita Universiti Malaysia Sabah’ (KESUMBA) successfully generate more than RM50,000 for their income since June 2013 until May 2014.

The amount was gained through several activities including rental sites for flower sales during UMS Convocation, rental for Graha Suvaneka shop, corporate gifts and table for ‘Majlis Makan Malam Semarak Budi’.

According to KESUMBA’s President, Datin Baidah Ibrahim; income generating activities has enabled KESUMBA to contribute to welfare agencies. The orphanage and UMS students welfare fund are some of the agencies received the contribution.

“This proves KESUMBA’s concern to help those in need and giving the opportunity to KESUMBA to approach the community,” she said today during her speech for the 17th KESUMBA Annual General Meeting held at Teratak KESUMBA.

UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah complement KESUMBA members’ roles that able to give great contribution to the university’s progress during his opening speech.

“I am proud that KESUMBA members are able to manage household activities efficiently, upbringing and caring for the children, and also at the same time managed to do the office work dedicatedly and active in contributing to the university through the club activities. Well done and congratulation!” he said.

Datuk Dr. Harun also had the opportunity to officiate ‘Taman Herba KESUMBA’. The herb garden have more than 20 types of herb; some of them are Gyunura Procumbens Back (Pokok Sambung Nyawa), Aloe Vera, Sabah Snake Grass, Pereskia Sacharosa/Saecnarosa (Jarum Tujuh Bilah), Turmeric and Black Tumeric.-ZMD

University Portland logoFRIDAY, 13 JUNE – University of Portland, Oregon plan to have collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

Cultural Affairs Officers, United States Embassy, Arend Zwartjes said during his courtesy call visit to the Mayor of Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), Datuk Abidin Madingkir.

According to Arend said, University of Portland is planning to set up a medical school and planning to have a twinning programme with UMS.

A discussion regarding establishing ‘Portland and Kota Kinabalu Sister City’ was also mention during the visit.

A local newspaper reported today, DBKK is trying to get an approval for the proposal. –SS

pic AKALFRIDAY, 13 JUNE – The AKAL Group of the Academic Services Division, Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) recently exhibited excellent performance at the Excellent Team Convention (ICC) Regional Level 2014.

AKAL clinched the gold medal at the competition competing with 34 other groups from government agencies and private companies in Sabah and Sarawak.

The group presented their project called ‘Instructions Delivery Method and Less Effective Exam Rules’ found that among the causes of problems were students’ attitude who do not heed to instructions and exam rules besides being less sensitive to the audio system.

Thus, AKAL proposed a solution in an innovative way when they combined the audio and visual elements in conveying rules and regulations so as not to interfere with the examination conducted each semester.

With the win, AKAL Team headed by Roslianah Opao will represent Sabah and Sarawak along with nine other members to the National Level Excellent Team Convention to be held this coming October.

Held at the Four Points Hotel, Kuching, Sarawak, the programme organised by the Malaysian Productivity Corporation (MPC) among others was aimed at promoting and intensifying the efforts of the organisation to improve work productivity. – ZMD (fl)

Felda Persada

THURSDAY, 12 JUNE - Students from 'Permuafakatan Siswa Siswi Felda' (PERSADA) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) Trolak Perak conduct 'Program Integrasi Awan Biru' recently.

87 students from the three institutions conduct community service by having a 'Khalifah' workshop; teaching youth and children religious obligations in Islam. The event was hold at Felda Sampadi Sarawak.

According to the programme director, Mohd Aidy Seran, the activity is the idea from UMS Deputy Vice-Chancellor Student Affairs and Alumni who wants UMS PERSADA to become the medium to bring forward the national education agenda to the society.

Mohd Aidy, final year students Faculty of Psychology and Education said the programme was also filled with motivational talk, as the university efforts servicing the community especially the Felda generations.

The opening ceremony was formalized by Felda Community Development Deputy Director, Abdul Ghani Mohd. Ali.

In his speech, he urges the children of Felda to be thankfull to the government who are focused in developing and pushing forward their community in education.

The programme is, jointly organized by Felda, Seranta Sabah and Sarawak, was also attended by UNIMAS Deputy Vice-Chancellor Student Affairs and Alumni, Prog. Mohd Fadzil Abd Rahman. Asmarah Rikun, Head of Sabah Seranta, and Awang Sapri Awang Ahmad, Head of Sarawak Seranta was also present during the programme. -SS

Jejak Etnik
THURSDAY, 12 JUNE – 65 students joined ‘Program Dokumentari Jejak 214’ organized by Secretariat of Rukun Negara Universiti Malaysia Sabah (SRUMS).

Programme coordinator, Kim Asbiyallah Shah Akim, the programme is intended to track 214 ethnics in Sabah.

“Dusun ethnic in Kundasang and Kudat is one of them. The students are divided into two groups. They are later become foster to the family at Walai Tokou Homestay Kundasang and Misompuru Homestay Kudat,” she said to the Media Chancellory.

She said, various activities conducted throughout the programme. One of them is learning the daily life of Dusun ethnic in Kundasang and Rungus in Kudat.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Student Affairs and Alumni, Prof. Madya Datuk Dr. Kasim Hj. Md. Mansur said, the programme is in accordance to the objective of founding Secretariat of Rukun Negara under the Department of National Unity and Integration (JPNIN).

“Hence, I give my full supports to the students’ efforts in tracing the ecthnics in Sabah, especially the ethnics that are some of the community in this country still unfamiliar with,” he added.

The five days program is organized with supports from Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), Kolej Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Selangor (KUIS), Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Kedah. –SS–
