OBETUESDAY, 10 JUNE – In line with the government’s efforts to position Malaysia as a hub of international education, the design and implementation of academic programmes must meet the standards set by the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF).

Thus, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah said all higher learning institutions (IPT) should play a significant role in the delivery and evaluation of academic programmes in the context of Outcome Based Education (OBE).

“OBE requires teaching and learning activities, and assessments to be in line with its concept also known as student-based learning,” he said this at the opening of the Regional Seminar on OBE organised by the Centre for Academic and Strategic Management UMS. His speech was read by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof. Dr. Shariff A. K. Omang.

Datuk Harun added that OBE currently was a part of the teaching and learning activities since its inception in Malaysia in 2009.

“The approach on teacher-centred teaching and learning to students by focussing on what students can actually do after completing a course or programme,” he said.

Almost 150 participants from higher learning institutions around Sabah and Sarawak attended the programme which was also attended by the Director of Academic Development Management, Ministry of Education Malaysia, Assoc. TUESDAY, 10 JUNE – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in collaboration with Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM) recently organised an inaugural lecture delivered by Ustaz Kazim Elias at Dewan Canselor, UMS.

Ustaz Kazim was specially flown in to Kota Kinabalu courtesy of MASwings Sdn Bhd, and was obviously seen to foster the sharing of knowledge towards community excellence especially in Sabah.

According to the CEO of the airline, Dato’ Kapten Mohd Nawawi Hj Awang; the effort was a commitment by MASwings to reach out to the local community on MASwings’ ‘Wings of Love’ spirit.

ceramah4“This sharing of knowledge among others was to welcome the month of Ramadan Al-Mubarak that is just around the corner,” he quipped.

Earlier, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) UMS, Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Hj Kasim Hj Md Mansur said the organising of this event was very timely with the exam week at UMS.

He clarified that this sharing of knowledge activity helped in firing up the spirit and perseverance among students to face the coming examinations.

MONDAY, 09 JUNE – Around 4,000 people attended ‘Ceramah Perdana’ delivered by an independent speaker, Ustaz Mohd Kazim Elias at Chancellor Hall, UMS.

 

Ustaz Mohd Kazim Elias, which are known with the comedy and relax approach on his talk, stayed for two days in Kota Kinabalu to shared his religious knowledge with the local community.

 

In his talk, Ustaz Mohd Kazim said, the Holy Quran is the life manual to all Muslims and should be used as guidance in every aspects of life.

 

“The problem faced with the Muslims nowadays, is that they don’t want to learn this life manual. In the end, they become flustered when facing obstacles,” he said.

 

It is important to learnt lessons from obstacles faced by other peoples. We must also realise that the obstacles faced by others can also become a test to us, he explained.

 

ceramah 2“Obstacles can be in various forms. It is not restricted to a form of misfortune or even destruction. But the test from Allah S.W.T. can also be in a form of wealth and health,” he added.

 

Ustaz Mohd Kazim, founder to the Pusat Pendidikan Al-Barakah, also reminded the crowds not to abandon the orphan and the poor.

 

“In Al-Maun, Allah S.W.T. tells us, a liar in religion is those who treats the orphan with harshness and does not urge (others) to feed the poor,” he said.

pjj teaterMonday, 9 June Professions as teachers does not become a hindrance for a group of UMS Distance Learning Teachers to show off their artistic talent through a performance of play.
 
UMS Creative Writing lecturer from Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage, Mohd Suhaimi Md Yassin said; even though the teachers teach different subjects but they are able to show off their artistic performance talents to the maximum.
 
“Some of them are Physical Education, Mathematic, English teachers but they are able to perform a performance of play. All of them are able to awe the audience with the story play and their characters.”
 
“This also means that the Distance Learning Teachers skills are able to bring forward this play not just at the university level, but they also can bring this play to the national and international level,” he said.
 
Commenting on the overall performance, he said that the students show that they are able to master the stage areas with a powerful vocal and strong theme and messages. The variation and diversity of the performance, is also making it as a brilliant performance.
 
Every performance from these students is able in giving deep impact to the spectators, through the meaning, message, thinking ideologies and ideas other than becoming a great play,” he added more.
 
The Distance Learning group of students are school teachers for primary and secondary schools performed their play at Theatrette Ahmad Nisfu, UMS as their prerequisite to pass with distinction in their creative writing subject, this semester.

DATUK HENRY CHIN POY WU
Monday, 09 June – A member UMS Board of Directors received the ‘Panglima Setia Mahkota’ (PSM) which carries the titles “Tan Sri” on last Saturday.
 
Tan Sri Datuk Henry Chin Poy Wu received the title in conjunction with the Malaysia Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halik Mu’adzam Shah’s birthday.
 
Recipients of the same title are also, Datuk Hasan Lah, Federal Court Judge, Datuk Sri Idrus Harun, Solicitor-General, Datuk Dr. Madinah Mohamad, Secretary-General of Ministry of Education, Datuk Sri Haji Mohamed Apandi Haji Ali, Federal Court Judge, Datuk Tan Kok Wha, Federal Court Judge and a few of other recipients.
 
The late ASP Mohd Zabri Abdul Hamid Platoon Commander 2, one of the 69 Commando heroics also received a Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa (S.P.).
 
There are 1,622 recipients of the federal awards and medals for 2014.
