SPU PaediatricTHURSDAY, 08 MAY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in collaboration with the Women and Children Hospital Sabah will host the inaugural 1st Borneo Paediatrics and Paediatric Surgery Conference starting tomorrow (Friday).

More than 400 participants are expected to participate in the conference which will be held at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences UMS.

The two-day conference will also discuss topics on issues of child protection, paediatric cardiology, and advances in the management of paediatric surgery.

In addition, the 1st Borneo Paediatrics and Paediatric Surgery Conference will also present some research papers from among the participants.

According to Head of the Organising Committee, Dr. Shunmugam Rajah, the conference will also incorporate members and health professional organisations from within and outside the country including the Association of Paediatric Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand.

“The organisation is also a continuation of the celebration of UMS 20 year establishment this year,” he added.

KentTuaran07.05.14WEDNESDAY, 07 MAY – A seminar on Quality Management 2014 was held today organised by Postgraduate students under the Master of Education Programme (Educational Management), Group 1 (1), Second Semester (2), 2013/2014 Session School of Education and Social Development (SPPS), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). It was in collaboration with the Tuaran District Education Office and the Malaysian Teachers Education Institution Kent Campus, Tuaran.

With the theme ‘Pengurusan Kualiti Tonggak Kecemerlangan Organisasi Pendidikan’ or Quality Management Key to Sustainable Education Organisation, the seminar aimed to expose quality management practices towards shaping a sustainable education.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Mohd Zaki Ishak, Deputy Dean of Research and Innovation, School of Education and Social Development UMS, in reading the speech of the Dean, Prof. Dr. Ismail Ibrahim said that the main focus of the seminar was to improve the understanding on the management’s role and responsibility in the planning and implementation of MS ISO 9001:2008.

“Teachers and the school’s management are the main players for the success of students,” he added.

Earlier, the Tuaran District Education Officer, Tah Nia Haji Jaman said that quality management system was important towards having an impact on good service system and would be a benchmark for developed countries. Her speech was read by her representative, Assistant Education Officer of Tuaran District, Rozalind Johanis.

“Quality management should be implemented in every department because quality management system should be made the key point in every excellent service ,” she stressed.

The seminar also included talks with one presented by the Director of SIRIM Sabah and Federal Territory of Labuan, Haji Khairan Untoh.

More than 100 people attended the talks and seminar.

Also present at the function were Senior Lecturer, SPPS, Dr. Khairuddin Abdullah who was also the Advisor of the programme and Programme Director, Mohammad Azman Jongkulin. – FL

inovasi apk1TUESDAY, 6 MAY – A number of creative and innovative products by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) undergrads were displayed at the 10th Basic Entrepreneurship Acculturation Expo (APK) which ended today.

Smart Handphone Holder innovation by a group of undergrads from the School of Social Sciences was among those that attracted visitors to the expo. The product was made by undergrads from shampoo bottles which served as a mobile phone holder which can be connected to when charging.

A member of the group, Marjaidi Asmara explained that the product can be made into a variety of forms according to the different types of mobile phones available in the market.

“This product is designed to solve the most common problem faced by users, such as placing the mobile phone at a height when charging with the risk of falling which could cause damage to the mobile phone,” he said.

He added that in addition to the product; two products of their creation, UMS Creative Badge and UMS Bangle Style also received overwhelming response from visitors.

Another creative entrepreneurship product also received overwhelming response from visitors during the two-day sale.

Sweet Memory Photobooth invented by a group of undergrads from the School of Business and Economics (SPE) looked simple but yielded profitable revenue. The undergrads used two different patterned fabric as background and visitors would hold attractive patterned picture frames before the photographer snap their unique pictures.

SPE undergrad, Izzah Asyikin disclosed that their group recorded sales which was above their actual target.

“We were targeting to sell at least 40 pieces of pictures, but 79 far exceeded our expectations,” she added.

An estimated 3,000 visitors visited the 10th APK Expo which was held at the parking lot of UMS Library. – MA (fl)

fakulti umsTUESDAY, 06 MAY – In line with the academic transformation in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah today declared the newly structured 10 faculties in a formal ceremony at Dewan Resital, UMS.

The use of ‘faculty’ will substitute ‘school’ which had been in use since the establishment of UMS. The transformation also saw the restructuring of 13 existing schools into 10 faculties.

The 10 faculties are Faculty of Science and Natural Resources, which is a combination of the School of Science and Technology and the School of International Tropical Forestry; Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage which is a combination of School of Social Sciences and School of Arts; Faculty of Psychology and Education a combination of School of Psychology and Social Work and School of Education and Social Development.

School of Engineering and Information Technology is now known as Faculty of Engineering, Labuan School of Science Informatics is changed to Faculty of Computing and Informatics; School of Sustainable Agriculture to Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture, School of Food Science and Nutrition to Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition, School of Business and Economics to Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting, Labuan School of Business and Finance to Faculty of International Finance Labuan and School of Medicine to Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Datuk Harun said in his speech after reaching the age of 20, it was timely that UMS academic entity be revised to strengthen the ecosystem for undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

“In other words, UMS need academic transformation to ensure we remain relevant, referred to and respected,” he stressed.

According to him, this transformation was to tackle the challenges ahead, among which were globalisation of higher education, internationalisation of higher education, the issue of graduates employability, high expectation by stakeholders, and the reduction of central provisions.

At the ceremony, Datuk Harun also presented Letter of Appointments to the 10 deans of the faculties. The Deans are Assoc. Prof. Dr. Baba Musta who will head the Faculty of Science and Natural Resources, Prof. Dato’ Haji Mohd. Hamdan Hj. Adnan as the Dean for Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage, Prof. Dr. Ismail Ibrahim as the Dean of Faculty of Psychology and Education, Prof. Ir. Dr. Rosalam Sarbatly as Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ag. Asri Ag. Ibrahim as the Dean of Faculty of Computing and Informatics.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azwan Awang is appointed the Dean of the Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sharifuddin Md. Shaarani as Dean of the Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rasid Mail as the Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Syed Nasirin Syed Zainol Abidin as the Dean of Faculty of International Finance Labuan and Prof. Dr. D. Kamarudin D. Mudin as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

bphMONDAY, 05 MAY – The Housing and Hospitality Division (BPH), Student Affairs Department, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) made a working visit to Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) recently.

The visit was accompanied by six officers from BPH headed by the Chairman of Residential College Heads UMS (MAPeK), Dr. Andika Aziz Hussin.

According to Dr. Andika, the purpose of the visit was to exchange information and new ideas about Residential College at the two universities.

“It is in line with BPH aim which is to provide the best service in terms of accommodation, welfare and safety of students,” he said.

During the visit, the delegation was taken to see the surroundings and facilities available at the residential college Perwira and Residential College Tun Fatimah, UTHM.

“Such visits are beneficial to Residential College UMS as a centre of excellence and complements the university’s education system,” he concluded. – (fl)
