AIE 1THURSDAY, 16 APRIL – A total of 32 art works by 30 local artists including nine from the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was displayed at Ocean7 Art Gallery, Oceanus Waterfront Mall Kota Kinabalu in conjunction with Art Inspiration Exhibition 2015.

The exhibition, which was also supported by the Sabah Visual Arts Association (PSVS) aimed at creating art awareness among the local community and promoting Tourism Art by introducing local talents internationally.

According to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) UMS, Professor Dr. Shahril Yusof, UMS students involvement in showcasing their art work would open up better career opportunities.

“Graduates today must be more willing to become job creators and not just waiting to fill up vacancies in any organisation. Through this exposure, I believe our art students would have a brighter career opportunities,” he said when officiating at the exhibition.

He added that the organisation of the exhibition was also a good example for the Malaysian Education Development Plan (Higher Education) First Shift, which is Holistic, Entrepreneurial and Balanced Graduates.

“The exhibition also provides an opportunity for UMS students to gain exposure on the challenges in the entrepreneurial world who are skillful such as the art enthusiasts today,” he said.

Prof. Shahril also welcomed the involvement of the industry and the community who were experts in their respective fields to serve with UMS thus helping to increase in the production of excellent graduates.

penjenamaan kolejWEDNESDAY, 15 APRIL – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) today launched the rebranding of the students residential colleges in a symbolic launch that took place this morning.

Datuk Amir Kahar, who is the son of former Chief Minister of Sabah, Tun Datu Mustapha Harun officiated at the event that marked the official change of name from Residential College AB to Residential College Tun Mustapha.

It was followed by the symbolic launch of Residential College CD rebranded to be now known as Residential College Tun Fuad.

The symbolic launch for this was done by the wife of the late Tun Fuad Stephens, Toh Puan Rahimah Stephens.

Present at the ceremony were UMS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah; Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs, Associate Professor Dr. Ismail Ali, as well as the principal officers including staff and students of the university.

The rebranding exercise of the student residential colleges is a continuation of the university’s branding transformation plan in conjunction with its 20th anniversary as announced at the Vice-Chancellor’s Message last year. – MA (fl)

jelajah ilmuWEDNESDAY, 15 APRIL – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Felda Undergrads Mutual Secretariat (PERSADA) in collaboration with Publicity Department Sabah and Kota Belud District Education Office organised a Knowledge Tour Series 2, recently.

According to the secretariat of the programme, Rohani Hadi, the organisation of this programme was aimed to give motivation and sharing with secondary school students on the daily life of an undergrad.

“The programme was participated by 18 UMS undergrads and involved eight secondary schools in the Kota Belud district,” she said when contacted by media after the programme.

She said about 1,000 participants comprising students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Pekan, SMK Pekan 2, SMK Arshad, SMK Taun Gusi, SMK Agama Tun Said, SMK Tambulion, SMK Usukan and SMK Narinang benefitted from the programme.

He said, the undergrad programme was seen as a medium of a two-way interaction between undergrads and school students thus helped in forming personality of the target group.

“At this event, UMS PERSADA shared their knowledge and experience about campus life. Besides that, a motivational session conducted by the Chairman of Publicity Department for Felda Sabah, Asmarah Rikun and UMS Counselor, Adzmil Abidin was also held,” Rohani added.

The two-day programme was also attended by the Special Assistant Secretary to the Speaker of the State Assembly, Halil Rufli and the Kota Belud District Education Officer, Bees Sacoh. – ZMD (fl)

taklimat zakat KALWEDNESDAY, 15 APRIL – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Mosque and Islamic Affairs Division (BHEIM) Labuan International Campus (KAL) organised a zakat briefing at the Executive Meeting Room, Level 11, University Tower Building, today.

The briefing that was attended by UMSKAL staff, was delivered by an Executive of the Labuan Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ), Abdullah Mohammad Tajuddin.

He explained the importance of zakat, its advantage and zakat properties including its method of calculation.

“Civil servants are encouraged to pay zakat through payroll deductions online,” he said.

The briefing was also attended by Islamic Affairs Officer, Junaidi Kepli and almost 50 staff including lecturers. – SS (fl)

FPEP antarabangsaTUESDAY, 14 APRIL – More than 150 participants attended the International Conference on Natural Resources, Tourism and Services Management organised by the Faculty of Business, Economy and Accounting (FPEP) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) held in Kota Kinabalu.

The conference organised in collaboration with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) also included participants from Japan, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Australia and Indonesia.

The three-day conference, which started today featured experienced presenters in the field of tourism industry and services to the participants, and was also attended by representatives of higher education institutions across the country.

The ceremony was held this morning and officiated by the Board Member of Tourism Malaysia and Chairman of Sabah Parks, Dato’ Seri Tengku Dr. Zainal Adlin Tengku Mahamood.

Also present were UMS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah and FPEP Dean, Associate Professor Dr. Rasid Mail. – SS (fl)
