SATURDAY, 12 APRIL – The 10^th edition of the Higher Education Carnival “Jom Masuk U” organised by the Ministry of Education Malaysia started today with hundreds of school students including their parents and teachers thronged the 50 booths set up for this event.

This is an outreach programme of the Education Ministry since 2005 and has since become their signature programme.

The carnival aimed at providing education information in one place for the benefit of the public.

Media Chancellery UMS had the chance to speak to some visitors; among them was Devonnie Marcilluslee, 18, who just received her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) result. Devonnie who studied at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Likas took the chance to sign up for a culinary course at the carnival. She came to know about the carnival through her friends who spread the news through social media.

Another student, Jeffrey Jumenik, 17, learned about the carnival through flyers given in his school, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Padang Berampah, Sipitang, Sabah. Jeffrey who is the Chairman of the Bahasa Malaysia Club in his school and also a member of the Peer Programme called ‘Pembimbing Rakan Sebaya’ hopes to further his studies to Matriculation and aspires to be a policeman in future. When asked about their transport to Kota Kinabalu, he explained that they had hired a van to ferry their group from Sipitang to 1Borneo Hyper mall where the carnival is held.

FRIDAY, 11 APRIL – The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni (HEP), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Hj. Kasim Hj. Md. Mansur said undergraduates should be an icon to secondary school students.

According to him, undergraduates should be exemplary thus affording the drive for students to strive to enter university.

He was speaking at the SEMEGA Knowledge Adventure Series 1 themed ‘Motivating Students to the Ivory Tower’.

Touching on the programme, Datuk Kasim said that the university had always supported activities with volunteerism and motivation in nature.

“In addition to fostering the university-community relationship, such programme is also beneficial in sharpening skills and techniques in communication and public speaking of the students who will always face with many questions from students throughout the programme,” he said.

The Department of Student Affairs and Alumni (HEP) had simultaneously initiated the programme for two consecutive days at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tawau, SMK Kinabutan, SMK Jambatan Putih, SMK Umas-umas, SMK Balung, SMK Tawau II, SMK Abaka, SMK Wakuba and SMK Merotai.

FRIDAY, 11 APRIL – The Rugby Match Refereeing Course Level 1 was organised by the International Rugby Board (IRB) in collaboration with the Residential College Cemerlang Dinamik (Kolej CD) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently.

The course was held over two days and participated by 26 participants including three undergrads from the Sports Science Course of the School of Education and Development (SPPS) UMS.

One of the participants, Azlena Kula said that the course which required physical and mental strength was very beneficial to them.

Azlena, who was also one of the state players who represented Sabah in the Malaysian Rugby Team said that the organisation of the course was timely to improve the quality and knowledge of a referee, especially to former rugby players who were new to the Rugby Match Refereeing.

For UMS student, Mohd. Syarul Said felt lucky to have been selected to join the course as it was not only an international level course but one that was organised by IRB itself.

He said UMS students should take the opportunity to join such courses as a way to widen their knowledge and also to equip themselves to be more competitive so as to be more marketable in the job market.

The Refereeing Course Level 1 will also be held in Tawau, Sipitang and Sandakan. Meanwhile, the Advance Course Level 2 is expected to be held in November in Kota Kinabalu. – SS (fl)

THURSDAY, 10 APRIL – The Higher Learning Institutions Carnival 2014 or better known as ‘Jom Masuk U’ is back for it’s 10^th edition this year. It will be held from 12 – 13 April 2014 at 1 Borneo Hyper mall, Kota Kinabalu.

This ‘signature programme’ is an outreach programme organised by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) and had been receiving overwhelming response especially from Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) school leavers from around Sabah.

KPM has been using the tagline ‘Jom Masuk U’ to educate and motivate the youngsters and to disseminate correct and latest information on education opportunities at the ivory tower.

The public especially SPM and STPM school leavers are welcome as there would be education exhibition, entrance information, quizzes, counselling services from public and private higher learning institutions including polytechnics, Community Colleges, Public Skills Training Institute, Government Agencies; as well as counselling on sponsorships, scholarships, banks etc.

The Carnival starts from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm. - FL
