Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), through its Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), continues to enhance students' practical competencies in engineering surveying through Survey Camp SCMMXXVI, held in Kundasang, recently.
According to a statement by FKJ, the programme was led by Associate Professor Sr. Ts. Br. Dr. Asmawan Mohd. Sarman, and involved 63 second-year Civil Engineering students enrolled in the KA20801 Survey Camp course,
The programme also involved academic staff at FKJ, including Ir. Dr. Nelly Majain, Ts. Dr. Elis Mardzianah Datuk Hj. Mazlan, Ts. Dr. Muhd Fauzy Sulaiman, Ms. Nur Afini Septiyana Normat and Ms. Dayang Masliah Marsuka.
“This programme is designed to provide student with hands-on learning experiences that bridged classroom theory with real-world engineering applications.
“Throughout the camp, students carried out a range of engineering surveying activities, including Open Traverse Survey, Closed Traverse Survey, Levelling, Tacheometry, Detail Survey, Setting Out, As-Built Survey, as well as digital design using Autodesk Revit.
“Students also collected, analysed and processed field data using AutoCAD and QGIS software to produce traverse plans, contour maps, engineering drawings and proposed site layouts,” according to the statement.
The statement also noted that, in addition to technical training, the programme featured project presentations and an Individual Field Test, enabling students to apply their knowledge and skills in operating surveying equipment, performing field measurements and applying engineering surveying techniques under actual site conditions.
The programme also helped students build self-confidence while enhancing their critical thinking, communication, leadership and teamwork skills, preparing them for future careers in the engineering profession.
The camp concluded with a closing ceremony recognising outstanding participants through several award categories, including Survey Race, Individual Poster Competition, Group Video Montage Competition, Best Group Survey Camp, Best Individual Male, and Best Individual Female.
