Monday, 09 June – A member UMS Board of Directors received the ‘Panglima Setia Mahkota’ (PSM) which carries the titles “Tan Sri” on last Saturday.
 
Tan Sri Datuk Henry Chin Poy Wu received the title in conjunction with the Malaysia Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halik Mu’adzam Shah’s birthday.
 
Recipients of the same title are also, Datuk Hasan Lah, Federal Court Judge, Datuk Sri Idrus Harun, Solicitor-General, Datuk Dr. Madinah Mohamad, Secretary-General of Ministry of Education, Datuk Sri Haji Mohamed Apandi Haji Ali, Federal Court Judge, Datuk Tan Kok Wha, Federal Court Judge and a few of other recipients.
 
The late ASP Mohd Zabri Abdul Hamid Platoon Commander 2, one of the 69 Commando heroics also received a Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa (S.P.).
 
There are 1,622 recipients of the federal awards and medals for 2014.

CERAMAH UST KAZIM
Friday, 6 June – Universiti Malaysia Sabah expected around 5,000 crowds will be in there to attend ‘Ceramah Perdana’ from Ustaz Mohd Kazim Elias tomorrow.
 
The talk is entitled, ‘Hikmah di Sebalik Cabaran dan Dugaan Hidup’ will be held at Chancellor Hall at 8.00 tomorrow morning. There will be no entrance fee charged.
 
The talk is organized to encourage among the Muslims to attend a knowledge session and also strengthening the bond between Muslims between campus and the community.
 
Audience are reminded to be there early to avoid the traffic jam. The audience is also advice not to bring any foods or drinks inside to the Chancellor Hall.

Friday, 6 June  Traditional music played by indigenous community should be bringing forward to the global level.
 
Dean of Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage, UMS, Prof. Dato’ Mohd Hamdan Adnan said: indigenous and modern music don’t have a lot differences in term of melodiousness of the sound since the music note is universal and can be played with all musical instrument.
 
"Traditional music equipment and traditional music player feared would be extinct because the modern music industry is controlling the music industry nowadays. Therefore, efforts need to take to globalize this indigenous music. Among them is through hybrid method or combining the indigenous music with the global music element.”
 
“For example, the Music Studies programme in UMS is always making efforts to ensure the students to have skills and mastering modern and traditional instruments,” he said after the opening ceremony of Grand Recital Concert in UMS Recital Hall.
 
He added that the music industry now is expanding and able to offer lucrative income to the music activist. A commercial advertisement or film will always need music to enliven the atmosphere in the story.
 
“Music is now borderless with applications, in example YouTube is often used to promote music works that can be reached throughout the world. Hence, UMS hopes the Music Studies graduates can see the wider potential in music in, for their future career,” he said.
 
He also added a few efforts have been made in making sure the students are exposed to the globalization aspect by inviting a university from the Philippines in a choir performance and a musician from Japan to perform in a Music Jazz Performance last year.
 
The Grand Recital Concert is a final year project assessment where the final years Music Studies student will be performing in an orchestra. 26 performances will be assessing where 26 final year students will takes turn to be the conductor.

Makma14FRIDAY, 06 JUNE – Residential College Cemerlang Dinamik (CD) recently organised the Student Excellence Programme (MAKMA ’14) at Tabung Haji Building Complex (TAHA) Kota Kinabalu.

Various awards were presented such as Academic Achievement Award, Leadership Award, Best Programme Award, Entrepreneurship Award, Co-curricular Achievement Award, Best Ahtlete Award, Best Uniform Body Award, Hopeful Award and Former Fellow Appreciation Award and JAKMAS.

For the Best Academic Achievement Award, it was presented to Toh Siew Mien, a first year undergrad, Yew Han Huey (second year undergrad), Muhd. Yusuf Mohd. Sobery (third year undergrad) and Asmawati Wahab, a forth year undergrad.

The Leadership Award was given to Khairul Azmi Mustafa, who was also the President of the JAKMAS Residential College CD.

As for the Curriculum Achievement Award, it was won by Saripuddin Mappiasi, whilst the Best Programme Award was the Open Day Programme and College CD Undergrads Day.

As for the Uniformed Body Award, it was given to PALAPES Laut. Entrepreneurship Award was won by Siti Rohayu Karim whilst Male Athlete and Female Athletes Awards went to Faeze Azwan Safuan Abd Rahman and Nur Syahirah Brynna Gomes.

Other awards presented were the Hopeful Award, Student Affairs Department Special Award, Former Fellows and JAKMAS including a Romeo and Juliet of the Nite Award.

Hopeful Award for Male went to Muhammad Faiz Md Nasir and Hopeful Award for Female was given to Haslizah Nasrah.

The Student Affairs Department Special Award went to the Assistant Manager of College CD, Mohd Khairul Ismail. Hendry Sailabbi and Sharadjane Rasul were chosen as the Romeo and Juliet of the Nite.

The presentation of awards was done by the Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Hajah Jainah Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Ahmad Ayid and the Head of Residential College CD, Dr. Mohamad Nizam Nazarudin. – SS (fl)

Datuk MaryThursday, 05 June – Leadership in education profession is essential in shaping balanced human capitals.

Malaysia Deputy Minister of Education I, Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching said every educator must shows exemplary through leadership for the students to example.

She said during her keynote speech to the International Conference on Education 2014 (ICEdu14) participants, organized by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ).

She also suggests the educators to always practiced effective communication techniques to cultivate the students’ self-confidence.

“This will also nurtured excellence personality for the students whom are also mastered in communication skills and have high level of self-esteemed,” she added.

Datuk Mary advised every school to have an approach by making close relations with the parents.

According to her, parents’ contribution is essentials and proven effective in order to increase students’ performance in schools.

Prof. Dr. Shahril Yusof, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Prof. Dr. Ismail Ibrahim Dean of Faculty of Psychology and Education were also present during the conference.
