Perhutanan SeduniaTUESDAY, 27 MAY – The active involvement of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in celebrating the World Forestry Day can instil a caring culture among the university community on the importance of maintaining the existing forest area.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah, efforts by the university through the School of International Tropical Forestry (SPTA) was in line with the noble deeds to jointly cultivate a love of the forest.

“Before this, UMS through this school was also involved in a various activities of good causes such as tree-planting in conjunction with new student enrolment or other celebrations as well as inviting primary school students to visit UMS and introduce forest-themed and environmental activities,” he said in his speech at the opening ceremony of the World Forestry Day celebration UMS level. His speech was read by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation, Prof. Dr. Shahril Yusof.

Datuk Dr. Harun said the tree-planting activity was proposed to be carried out by all staff and students of UMS.

“It is estimated that the tree planted will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime. Imagine with 300 trees planted, we can offset pollution caused by an individual in his or her lifetime,” he added.

At the event, Prof. Dr. Shahril also witnessed the signing of a Letter of Intent (LoI) between SPTA with Tropical Rainforest Conservation & Research Centre Ltd., G&G Management Consultant Pte. Ltd., and Sabahpuri Nursery SBH. Also present was the Dean of SPTA, Dr. Normah Awang Besar @ Raffie. – SS (fl)

adikaryaMonday, 26 May- Final year creative art students exhibited 61 pieces of creative artwork for their work assessments during 'Adikarya'. This is a Final Year Project, for the Writing Students Programme, is also open for the public's eyes view.

Muhamad Faizal Mustapa, the programme director, explained this final year creative arts (majoring in writing) students exhibit their works to be evaluate, for the first time, to the publics.

This programme, which explore and display works which are poetry, novel and short story script, and also the students thesis will be assessed and acknowledged.

With 'Citra Seni Wajah Kita' theme, this programme gives us opportunities to show our artistic writing talents, and also bring forward literary work as arts of thinking to the public.

This two days programme, will also recognised the students piece of work in a few categories as an appreciation to the commitments and efforts of the students in showcasing their artwork. Some of the awards are 'Anugerah Penulisan Puisi Terbaik', 'Anugerah Penulisan Skrip Terbaik', 'Anugerah Penulisan Tesis Terbaik', 'Anugerah Penulisan Novel Terbaik',' Anugerah Penulisan Cerpen Terbaik', and 'Anugerah Pameran Terbaik'.

This programme is supported by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka and Sabah National Department for Culture and Arts.

kursus kesumba05.06.14MONDAY, 26 MAY -The Bureau of Arts and Culture, Bureau of Information and Communication, and Bureau of Education of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Women Staff and Housewives Club (KESUMBA) will be organising an 'Etiquette and Personal Appearance' course on Thursday, 5 June 2014 at the Event Gallery, Chancellery Building, UMS.

The one day course will be presented by Siti Meriam Hussein, an image consultant from the Tun Abdul Razak Institute of Broadcasting and Information (IPPTAR), Angkasapuri, Kuala Lumpur.

The main objective of this course is to give an opportunity to each participant to add more knowledge relating to etiquette and their personal look to enhance their own personal appearance and quality especially when meeting with clients.

Among the topics of discussion that would be touched are sense of dressing, approach and appearance, day and night make-up, skin care, courtesy, protocol and social approach in an official or corporate function, communication, shaping your self-confidence, professionalism in your career and many more interesting and useful topics.

This course is not only opened to KESUMBA members and UMS staff but the general public as well. The fees are RM30 for members and RM100 for non-members.

haji-taufiqMONDAY, 26 MAY – The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) Sabah suggested that Universiti Malaysia Sabah Sports Centre equipment be fully utilised.

Its minister, Datuk Hj. Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan said the sports science facilities which were sophisticated added with a scheduled sports science programme would surely produce distinguished athletes.

Therefore, he recommended that the sports equipment used in UMS be shared with state athletes.

“This alliance is thus able to make Sabah one of the major powers in the field of sports in the country one day,” he added. He was speaking at a ceremony organised by the university recently.

At the occasion, he also expressed his appreciation for the implementation of a ‘blue print’ between his ministry and UMS related to short term, medium term and long term sporting development. - SS (fl)

Navy Sains SukanMONDAY, 26 MAY – Undergrads under the Sports Science Programme Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) conducted a study visit recently to the Malaysian Royal Navy Base (TLDM) Sports Complex.

It aimed among others, to gain knowledge and exposure on techniques and methods to effective sports infrastructure management.

Their visit was greeted by TLDM Sports Centre Officer, Lt. Nur Jad Affendi Jalal who then gave a briefing on sports equipment at the naval base.

One of the students, Rutlyne Joinis said the visit had given a lot of input which can be adapted to enhance the learning process as well as useful experience that can be applied to all forms of theories learned in lectures.

The undergrads were also taken to the football stadium, hockey pitch, swimming pool, multipurpose sports hall, squash courts, tennis courts and the Navy Yacht Club. – SS (fl)
