The Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition
About Us

Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition was established in the year 1997, 3 years after the establishment of University Malaysia Sabah (UMS). Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP) is formerly known as School of Food Science and Nutrition (SSMP) located at the School of Science and Technology (SST). After that, SSMP moved to the School of Engineering and Information Technology (SKTM) until the end of May 2006. SSMP has entirely operated at its own building which is located beside Masjid UMS since then.
The establishment of SSMP was in line with the need of this country to provide more professionals in the field of food science. At that time, SSMP only offered two programs which were a Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science and Nutrition and a Bachelor’s Degree in Food Technology and Bioprocessing. In 2009, SSMP introduced a new program which was a Bachelor’s Degree in Food Service. In line with the UMS academic transformation following the 20th-anniversary celebration, the name of SSMP was changed to the Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP) on 1 June 2014. This step was done as an effort to rebrand so that the faculty will stay relevant in facing the challenges of globalization and internationalization of higher education. At present, the total enrolment has exceeded 11,200 students through the three undergraduate programs offered. In 2018, a new program was offered which is a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition to fulfill the requirements of the Allied Health Professions Act 2016. The first enrolment of this program will be during the 2018/2019 session.
