Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP), UMS Conducts STEM Outreach Programme at SK Kitobu

KOTA KINABALU: The Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), recently organised a STEM Outreach Programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kitobu, aimed at introducing young learners to the importance of science and innovation.

The programme formed part of the STI 100³ Programme Cycle 2 for 2025, a nationwide initiative themed “100 Scientists, 100 Schools, 100 Days” led by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).

Through this initiative, FSMP UMS further strengthened its collaborative ties with SK Kitobu while supporting efforts to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education at the primary school level.

The programme was officially launched by the Headmistress of SK Kitobu, Maureen Peter Limpas. In her remarks, she noted that such initiatives are in line with the aspirations outlined in the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2026–2035 under the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE).

She emphasised that impactful programmes like this play an important role in fostering a culture of science and innovation among students, particularly in rural areas, while also encouraging confidence and expanding their future ambitions through early exposure to STEM fields.

Dr. Nur Hanisah Azmi, the scientist assigned to SK Kitobu, described the STI 100³ initiative as an effective platform for cultivating students’ interest in science and encouraging the application of scientific thinking in their daily lives.

According to her, the programme incorporated engaging elements such as interactive talks, science exhibitions, and educational games to highlight how STEM concepts are closely linked to everyday experiences, particularly in areas related to nutrition and health.

She added that FSMP UMS remains dedicated to enhancing public awareness of science and technology through creative educational approaches, alongside continuous collaboration between the university, schools, and the wider community.

The three-day programme successfully engaged over 190 students from Year 1 to Year 6. It was supported by FSMP lecturers, members of the UMS Nutrition Club, and U-Science UMS, who played key roles in delivering and facilitating the activities.
