Sejarah Fakulti

 

Fakulti Sains Makanan dan Pemakanan ditubuhkan pada tahun 1997 iaitu 3 tahun selepas Penubuhan Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). Diawal penubuhannya, ia lebih dikenali sebagai Sekolah Sains Makanan dan Pemakanan (SSMP) yang ditempatkan di Sekolah Sains dan Teknologi (SST). Selepas itu, SSMP telah berpindah operasinya ke Sekolah Kejuruteraan dan Teknologi Maklumat (SKTM) sehingga penghujung Mei 2006. Seterusnya, SSMP telah beroperasi sepenuh di bangunan sendiri yang terletak bersebelahan dengan Masjid UMS.

 

Penubuhan SSMP adalah selaras dengan keperluan negara bagi memenuhi kekurangan tenaga kerja mahir dalam bidang makanan berasaskan sains. Ketika itu, SSMP hanya menawarkan dua program iaitu program Ijazah Sarjana Muda Sains Makanan dan Pemakanan dan Program Ijazah Sarjana Muda Teknologi Makanan dan Bioproses. Pada tahun 2009, SSMP telah memperkenalkan program baru iaitu program Ijazah Sarjana Muda Perkhidmatan Makanan. Selaras dengan transformasi akademik UMS sempena ulang tahun tahun ke 20, pada 1 Jun 2014 nama SSMP telah ditukarkan kepada Fakulti Sains Makanan dan Pemakanan (FSMP). Langkah ini merupakan salah satu usaha penjenamaan semula agar fakulti kekal relevan dalam menghadapi cabaran globalisasi dan pengantarabangsaan pendidikan tinggi. Ketika ini, melalui tiga program prasiswazah yang ditawarkan telah mempunyai jumlah keseluruhan enrolmen pelajar adalah melebihi 11, 200 orang. Pada tahun 2018, satu program baru telah ditawarkan iaitu Ijazah Sarjana Muda Pemakanan dengan rasional untuk mewujudkan program ini adalah agar selari dan memenuhi keperluan Akta Profesion Kesihatan Bersekutu 2016 serta tuntutan masyarakat setempat. Enrolmen pertama bagi program ini adalah pada sesi pengajian 2018/2019.

 

FSMP juga menawarkan program diperingkat pascasiswazah secara penyelidikan dan kerja kursus (Program Ijazah Sarjana Sains - Kualiti dan Keselamatan Makanan). Bilangan enrolmen pelajar pascasiswazah sehingga kini adalah sebanyak 43 orang.
