13 Mei 2025 (Tuesday) | Kota Kinabalu Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP) held a Workshop on Filling in the E-Linkages system at the Odoratissimus Meeting Room, FSMP. The workshop was delivered by Mr. Sylvencent Pokhan, Head of Administration, Strategic Management Center (PPS), UMS. The workshop was attended by FSMP academic staff and also the Person-in-charge (PIC) for LoI/ MoU/ MoA management at FSMP.

Future Food: Emerging Trends, Health, and Diversity

Public Lecture 2025 organized by Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP), UMS was successfully held on 14 May 2025 (Wednesday) at the FSMP Seminar Room. This lecture featured a renowned figure, Prof. Dr. Abdul Salam Babji, Chief Science Officer and Inventor, who touched on critical issues and the future of the global food system. Among the important essences covered was the urgent need to produce healthy and sustainable food through research innovation, product development and food processing technology. He emphasized the role of a plant-based diet as an important trend post-COVID-19, not only in building immunity and gut health, but also in reducing the carbon footprint of the food industry. Research on local agro-raw material sources and industry-university collaboration were also highlighted as key keys in developing a more environmentally friendly and affordable food system. This session was attended physically and also broadcast live via Webex and Facebook Live. The highest appreciation is extended to the Malaysian Board of Technologists (MBOT) for their cooperation as co-organizers and all parties who made this program a success. The visit of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya to the Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition, Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

The Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (FSMP UMS), was honored to receive a courtesy visit from the delegation of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia. The Universitas Brawijaya (UB) delegation was welcomed by Prof. Ts. Dr. Hasmadi Mamat, Dean of FSMP, along with the FSMP executive management team. The UB delegation was led by Prof. Dr. Ir. Eddy Suprayitno, accompanied by Abdul Aziz Jaziri and Heder Djamaludin. This visit served as a platform for discussions involving research collaboration, exchange of expertise, and opportunities for student and academic staff mobility between the two institutions. It is hoped that these discussions will enhance strategic cooperation in the fields of research and seafood production. Our sincere thanks to Universitas Brawijaya for their willingness to visit FSMP UMS. May this partnership continue to strengthen for the mutual benefit of advancing the field of seafood science.

Research Collaboration Discussion: Enhancing the Shelf Life of Local Bird's Nest Products for the Global Market

Kota Kinabalu, 20 May 2025 – The Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), received a visit from the Director of Namsong Trading, Mr. Tan Seng Geok, and company representative Ivonne Tan, to discuss the potential for research collaboration in the field of bird’s nest processing technology. FSMP was represented by the Deputy Dean of Research and Innovation, Ts. Dr. Fan Hui Yin; the Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Alumni, Dr. Jumardi Roslan; along with Ts. Dr. Ahmad Hazim Abdul Aziz and Associate Professor Dr. Lee Jau Shya during this strategic discussion session. Also present was Mr. Michael Chung, President of Windsor Group Company Limited from Hong Kong, who also expressed interest in strengthening the value and quality of local bird’s nest products for the international market. The discussion focused on exploring innovative and science-based approaches to extending the shelf life of bird’s nest products without the use of preservatives, in line with modern consumers’ increasing awareness of food safety and quality. This proposed collaboration is seen as a significant initial step toward strengthening strategic ties between academia and industry, particularly in the development of high value-added food products. FSMP expresses its appreciation for the interest and commitment shown by industry players in exploring this high-impact research area. A Letter of Intent will be signed in the near future as the first step toward formal collaboration.
